paint question
Tuesday, June 27, 2006 9:27 AM
i've been calling around some local shops to see how much a cheap but decent paint job would cost. i'm thinkin i just need an overall touch up. the clear on some parts is wearing off, so i was just gonna have them take the rest of the clear off, and just slap on a coat of primer and a coat or two of base, then clear it. everyone's telling me that it has to be completely strip to bare metal. is that true? the shop that repaired my fender didn't do that, they just painted over the donor panel. and didn't do all that good of a job. the paint has chipped in a couple of places and you can see the original red paint. they didn't prime that. what do you all think?

^^^ what he said... cheap and decent don't mix

And no it doesn't HAVE to be stripped to bare metal, but it should be taken down quite a bit almost to the metal at least. If the shop knows what they're doing it shouldn't be a problem, unless it's been repainted 100000 times. Make sure the shop warranties their work.... and don't expect cheap to = good paint job

i know cheap and decent is like oil and water, but the average estimates i was getting was $3k. i thought i would be able to find something a bit cheaper. i don't need a "show" finish, just something so it doesn't look dull and faded.
