Painting fender and color code question
Tuesday, June 27, 2006 4:54 PM
I have a 2000 sunfire, it looks silver but the title says grey. The fender was replaced with a red fender and needs to be painted. I was thinking of buying some of that paint stripper from walmart and then giving it a few coats of dupli-color spray paint if i can find the right color. There is also a tennis ball size dent on the side that went through the fiber glass and into the metal frame, how would I fill this in? regular filler + sanding? Also is there a way to get the color by the vin #

I can't answer the dent part but the VIN should contain the paint code, but it should also be on the spare tire cover. Go to the dealership and they can get the paint code for you.

VIN does not contain color code.

And yes, do NOT paint it with spraypaint, you'd be surprised how affordable something like that can be at a body shop.

Yeah, I had a local body shop paint a replacement driver side fender for $75. The guy managed to butt-match the paint perfectly too, so I didn't have to leave the car with him.

rattle can paint is the devil!!!!!
so your saying is that there is a hole on the fiberglass fender, yes it can be fixed and i will not go into a lenghty "how to" for a fiberglass repair
if you are unsure please take it to a shop and let a professional do it
i have fixed way to many cars that have been hacked and whacked
so please let a pro do it

can i haz bondo

What is so bad about spray paint? I have sprayed my bike and it came out pretty good

The problem is when you try to paint it with automotive paint later, spraypaint never really dries, so when they try to sand it off, it clogs the paper. Your body work costs will double or triple. Plus the paint will NEVER match, spraypaint fades faster in sunlight than automotive paint.

not to mention bike tubes are small so you wont notice things where as fenders hoods etx are large flat areas that will show off the imperfetions not to mention the fact that no matter how close it looks it wont match and on pieces that big it will be noticable.
