Does anyone know if it is illegal to use a coloured bulb (in my case a red one) over the liscence plate? I have red interior lights and thought I might change the l/p one, but don't want to find out with a ticket.
I have had a green light and tinted plate covers for 3 years now and no issues.
I am in Ottawa
live in ottawa also, seen many people (mostly from gatineau) driving with neon licence plate lights and tinted covers over the plates....though ive been told u can be ticketed for it, as it supposedly reduces the visibility of your plate, i still see these people driving around with them, so i guess its up to the police officers judgement.
Not sure how anything in Canada works, but I would try to get ahold of your local police department, city hall or what not to verify. With neon lighting, most of the cases it's the officers discretion though.
I was told by a York Region police officer that IF the officer wants to, he can give you a ticket for using any colour other than white. I was told it has to be a white light only. Even people driving around with the light removed and "neon" around the plate are driving illegally.
Same goes with license plate covers. They tried to give me a ticket for "obstructed plate" when I had my very light smoked covers on.
It is technically illegal in Ontario to have any colour other than white for your licence plate and its illegal to have any covers on them or neon plate covers ect. But in all reality only the pricks are going to pull you over for it... like window tint...
bastards...
but back on topic, yes it is illegal... but what isnt these days?

Well, rather then start a new topic about a similar question, I'll kick this one back up.
Anyone know off hand about changing their plate bulb in Illinois? I know the bulb size is the same size as the dome and trunk lights, and I was going to switch it over to one of those bright blue LED's, but I'm not sure if thats legal? I see those neon-plate borders around here a lot, and its not like the plate wouldn't be unreadable. Any insight?
Illinois Vehicle Code
(c) Either a tail lamp or a separate lamp shall be so constructed and placed as to illuminate with a
white light a rear registration plate when required and render it clearly legible from a distance of 50 feet to the rear. Any tail lamp or tail lamps, together with any separate lamp or lamps for illuminating a rear registration plate, shall be so wired as to be lighted whenever the head lamps or auxiliary driving lamps are lighted.
does any one know if red neon light inside the car r legal or not
Inside? As long as the bulb isn't visible from the outside of the car, it should be fine. Mainly cops have an issue with a clearly visible blue or red bulb with the obvious reason that it could confuse someone into thinking it was an emergency veichle.
it depends from state to state and province to province.
I know in Ontario, the bulbs can not be shown. Red and blue lights are Impersonating a police officer.
