Would a 98 cavi have a chip in the key because they are telling me it would cost $60 for a key to be made. I was thinkin of popin the lock out of my door and taking it to a lock smith or home depot to get a key made since they would be they same key right? thanks.
ok good but would you have any idea why they would ask $60 for a key?
go to a hardware store, your car more than likely has PASSKEY I and there is no transponder in the key. Whoever "THEY" are is a bonehead.
Not until 2006 did even the Cobalts have the GM +Keys, not sure why 2005 didn't.

sorry i ment the chevy parts department
you should know by now anything at the dealer your gonna get raped for
yes, i work at a dealer, their main goal is to rape you. They will make 100% profit off of parts if they can. You wanna know how much that key is?? 50 cent.
Most I've paid for a key at the dealer is $7.
I paid $3 for a new key lol.
i paid 14 for 1 but they had to call in to GM with the VIN# to get the key code
other than that our keys are standard keys , and only time it should cost any more is having to call GM to get the key code

the funny part is EVEN the PK3, +, and PK3+ keys only cost our store on average $7-12 dollars, the dealers sell them programmed for anywhere from $50-75 dollars. The charge for a hour of labor, even though it only takes 30 seconds or less to program the car to accept a new key. We charge $29 for customers who need a 2nd key for their remotes starters, it includes installation into the bypass module and programming, Dealers are RIP OFFS!

Well, at the parts counter for my key, cost me literally nothing cause of my discount, but the normal price would've been $3.50. Cavy keys contain nothing, so their nothing to make. Now for more expensive keys like older Buick's that have computer chips in them, thats where the price goes up. They just didn't look for the right key more then likely.
