I've been thinking about painting my exterior door locks & trunk lock black to match the rest of the car, but I was wondering how hard it would be to remove them from the car to paint them. Does anyone have some removal instructions?
I know that the paint would chip easily when you use a key on the lock, but I have keyless entry so I don't even remember the last time I used my key for anything other than to start the car. I was even thinking about not painting that little rectangular area that the key goes into & just leaving it silver.
Would a black permanent marker work for that tiny area just in case I would have to use my key for some reason? That way it wouldn't chip if I ever had to use the key. I know that wouldn't perfectly match the body of the car, but it's such a tiny area & the rest of the lock would be painted to match the body. Any ideas?
remove your door panels, disconnect the rod that is attached to the lock cylinder, remove the clip(i think there is a clip) from the cylinder, remove lock
the trunk lock is basically the same except i think that you have to turn it either clockwise or counterclockwise, there are tabs that have to line up so you can pull it out
hopefully that helps
Thanks for the info. Hopefully I'll have some time to work on the car this weekend and try to remove them.
Anyone think my idea above for painting the locks would work?
Why dont you just get the locks shaved? Especially since you don't use them.
But if you don't decide to go that route just make sure you rough up the surface of t he metal before applying paint.
Where can you get the lock covers? Are they something that you can just remove from the outside of the car if my keyless entry would stop working & I needed to use my key?
