DRL rerouting?
Thursday, December 28, 2006 12:13 AM
i was wondering if there was any way to cut out the drl, but have my front corner markers come on instead?

sort of like the firebirds, cobalts and corvettes. Id really love to do that, that way I can have them and the fogs on (Silverstar 880) and drive away, but i think that would be a real PITA to do, wiring and all. but if anyone knows a way, any help will be great.

This FAQ you post is a FAQ to completely disable the DRL's, not really just change the actual lamp that comes on. Atleast from what I read through of it.

Its going to take some creative re-wiring (Joe, he's asking for a rerouting of the DRL's, not a full disable )

Without knowing what car this is being attempted on, I have no idea where to begin.

If you think about it, it seems like a no brainer thing to do, but i know im not gonna attempt it right away and be the guinea pig...
but youd think all you had to do was find what wire ran into the headlamp bulb and snip it and re-route it to your corner light...but like i said, that seems too easy and i dont want to be the first to try and ef something up...
so good luck and keep us updated on how this progresses cus i may soon follow.

What year model are you attempting this on? I'll try to study the wiring a bit and figure out something for you.

My car may run 18s, but I can do your taxes in 10 seconds flat.
JBO lube - they would never have enough in stock and we'd never see RodimusPrime again

There might be a way using the existing DRL relay that would bypass the headlights if he has a pre2k car (and since there's no car in his registry...)

I'll have to bust out the DRL diagrams tonite and work on something

disable the drl's and turn the headlight switch one click... ta da turn sigs are on like drl's and the headlights are not, thats pretty much what your lookin for, just with no re-wiring

heres an easier way, yank up on the parking brake one click and then turn the parking lights on.

except that doesnt work for 03+ models, makes a real annoying dinging sound after lets say 5 mph

and as far as the disable the drl and do the one click on the headlamp switch, thats all well and good but, in my case id like to have the marker lights only and not also the taillights

exactly like that michael. i was away or i would have been more active in posting and clarifying. i have a 96 4-door cavi. but yes, i wanted the front turns to come on instead of the DRL's when i shifted out of park.

would this be as easy as cutting the DRL wire and splicing it into the wires for the front turns?

I don't see why you can't just find the wire that controls the DRL's, snip it and re-route it to the turn signal bulbs, it's quick and easy.

But, when the DRL's come on they aren't being supplied by a full 12 volts, right? Since they are so dim it doesn't seem that they would be. Not sure that it would matter for the turn signal lights, but it very possibly could. Might have to find the resistance in the wire and take it out, and then hopefully everything would still be good once you tried to use your blinkers.

Why dont ya just go the drl mod and then turn your lights on 1 click so only the front turns are lit?

How about this dumb thought? If you pull your e-brake on the lights go out, so you could just trigger this switch?? also what about switching light switch to parking, if you disable DRL?

Ok, there are 3 seperate wiring diagrams just for the DRL and parking light systems (I'm using a 98 Cavi first, since that - in my opinion - is the harder of the 2).

The main thing that I'm not sure about is getting it to where the bulb will flash with the blinkers. If you are to do the parking light DRL mod, those have them on the bright part of the bulb (similar to when the blinker is turned on, but not flashing)

That DRL system is integrated into the turn signal system to allow the bulb to flash when you need it to.

Without using several relays, this may not be possible...

If it were to be hooked up to the park only wire, then the turn signals would be able to function as normal. I'm still working on this, just can't do it overnight
