gas filler relocation to trunk

i started off be removing the tire and the inner gas filler shroud.

filler shroud gone

the filler neck is connected to the tank here.

i disconnected the filler neck and sealed the inlets to the tank using a rag, plastic bag, and a tie wrap. i did this to reduce gas and fumes(i had almost a full tank when i did it. nothing came out of the neck, but some did come out of the EVAP hose)

i then cut the neck and the EVAP tube

cut off

next i measured and cut a hole a hole for the gas cap using a whole saw (didn't have the right size so i increase the size with a dremel)

the location of the whole in the wheel well is very important! unfortunitly, i could not find a good way to predict the exact location.
guesstamation was the best i could do. (which caused some problems further on in this project)
trunk view

outside view

in order to test fit the way it sits, i had to cut the EVAP tube. seems to fit good

but the EVAP tube was preventing the trunk to shut!!! nothing that a hammer couldn't fix

i then cut a peice of the hose i bought and test fit it. found that it was really close to the tire.

another view

the solution i found was to relocate the bracket that secured the filler neck to the car
before

relocated

after

drilled whole for EVAP

last i connected everything

under the car

in the trunk

on with the bodywork

oh and you should just put the size of hose you used in this post since it was posted on that other post. that sounds confusing

filler neck hose needs to be 1 1/2 inside diameter and needs a 1/2 inside diameter.

btw, the gas cap doesn't allow the trunk to shut properly. i had shave a little off the top(handle) and tape over the hole temporarly untill i can find another solution. i'm going by autozone today to see what they have

ya. i was wondering the same thing. thought about sealing it in there with some kind of round insert, but then i thought if i did that, water would then just sit in there which obviously wouldnt be good.

i dont drive the car even if there are clouds in the sky, lol. but for washing it and if i were to get caught in the rain, that would suck.

come to think of it dont they make those flat gas filler caps? with a pull clip kinda release?

james did his with the sparco door and it was the best filler relocation ive ever seen.

good write up, do u know if its possible to relocate to the filler panel? have yet to look and make sure it wont be a slope.

If I ever get into the body shaving thing, I'm so doing this, the antenna, filler plates under the tail lights, and door locks......

They acaully make a cap that you just stick the gas filler in a little hole and so you dont have to remover the gas cap.. http://www.kleenwheels.com/permacap_install.htm i know thats what im going to do when i shave mine.. there is one i found quickly i think there is nicer ones out there tho..it looks low profile enough too...phil

solved the gas cap cearlance problem. i went to autozone and looked at all there caps, found nothing useful. so i bought the cheapest one to replace the original one that i hacked up. the resolution was using my favorite tool, a hammer! i simply hammered the inside of the trunk lid to gain clearance

BUT!! i'm still getting a check engine light. looks like i gotta go back autozone.

hmmm, i would assume that has to be the answer. make sure them lines are completely sealed and the code should go away.

any chance you could take a pic of the filler with the cap off??

ask and you shall receive....

if anyone is wondering why you see rust in that area, it's grind shavings from other projects. i just failed to clean it up after. it wipes right off
