Not sure if this is the right area,
I wonder if anyone else has heard this
My cavi is Black 2005, I have had 2-3 (1 was car stereo, another lube and oil tech) people look at it from a distance asking about my COUGAR and now a PARKING TICKET has my license number correct but described as a Mercury Cougar?

Not sure about your area, but here, that's grounds for dismissal. Check your state's rules on whether or not incorrect vehicle info is dismissable (small things such as misspellings, color variations -- aqua vs green -- are not... other things like incorrect plate #, descriptions, etc. may be)
It happens to me all the time... "Nice Eclipse" (when I'm driving my Fire); "Nice Regal/Monte" (when I was driving my Cutlass); "Nice Camaro/Chevelle" (when I'm driving my dad's Monte Carlo)

If you receive a ticket with incorrect vehicle information, in most cases it will not be grounds for an immediate dismissal. Despite what the previous poster states however, it will almost always get you out of a conviction if used wisely. Take for instance something as small as the officer incorrectly identifying your vehicle as a 4 door vs. 2 door on the citation. Request a court date, and do not reveal the officers mistake until you are cross-examining him/her. During your cross-examination, question the officer about details related to the incident, where they spotted you, how long they followed you, etc. Ask them if they are 100% confident in their recollection of the incident. Ask them if they are confident that they were pacing you at the speed indicated on the citation, and that all the information on their citation is correct. In my experience, police officers are rarely analytical thinkers, and will generally spout off yes, yes, yes, quickly without considering where your questioning might be headed. After they assure you and the court, that all the information on the citation is correct to the best of their knowledge, ask them how they can be sure that they were pacing you at the indicated speed, with all the distractions of driving; when they weren't even able to determine the correct number of doors on your vehicle, during the 15 minutes they were standing right next to it while writing the citation. Judge actually chuckled at this point. Dismissed. I'm sure you get the idea here, one mistake on a citation calls into question the validity of all information on that citation.

Will errors on the ticket result in the charges being dropped?
Courts will often excuse minor errors on a ticket. A misspelled name, incorrect address or difference in opinion on whether your car is aqua or green in color will not result in a dismissed ticket. Conversely, a major error such as citing the wrong statute, radically misidentifying your vehicle or listing the wrong highway as the site of the violation should provide justification to dismiss the ticket. However, it may be advantageous to say nothing about the errors until your trial. Let the officer use the ticket to describe the violation, location, and identification of your vehicle (they all do). After he or she has sufficiently buried him or herself with perjured testimony, you can document the errors and any legitimate court will dismiss the charges. Here is the law in Michigan. You need to remember that traffic court judges are not required to follow the law. (Taken from the Michigan Judicial Institute © 2003 Page 5) A material defect is an error pertaining to a fact that is necessary to prove an element of the offense, or that attacks the essence of the complaint.* Courts vary in their opinion as to what constitutes a material defect and magistrates should check with their chief judges regarding this issue. The case may be dismissed without prejudice by the judge or magistrate (if the magistrate is authorized to do so), and the citing officer may reissue the citation, or move to have it reinstated.
Material defects may include: *See MCL 257.742(1), 257.727c(3), and MCR 4.101(E)(1).
• No signature on the citation by the citing officer.* The absence of a signature is a material defect that makes the entire citation invalid. • Incorrect identification of the defendant. • Incomplete identification of the offense. • Failure to specify the location of the offense. • Failure to specify the date of the offense, or entry of an incorrect date.
yea you should be able to get that droped as stated above anytime a officer writes wrong info on the ticket it automaticly gets droped
^^ Agreed. Wrong ticket info = complete dismissal (at least in Indiana). If you fight it you should win.

Honesty, I commend you for that. I'd fight it anyway. There is corruption in the police force (this is a generalized statement, not really directed towards this officer in specific)... there's no way of knowing how many others have had the same thing occur by this officer. On the other hand, it could have been an honest mistake on the officers part in the identification of the car.
If you do choose to pay it, you could bargain though, take a lesser charge with no points incurred (to keep your insurance for going up) in exchange for allowing to present the error to the court.
I had received the honda comment on my old Neon before, never anything but a Honda, seems like "Honda" is a generalized statement for "modified vehicle" to some people....
as far as the misinformation on the ticket goes... if your sig is current, i find the nameplate on the trunk and chevy stickers on the sides hilarious... i would fight it just because of that alone, to make him look stupid... then again, i went to an arraignment for a ticket, agreed to pleed guilty, got a bargain for a much lesser fine than i was due. and the sheriff who gave the ticket was an awesome guy from beginning to end of the whole ordeal. no real reason to cause a fuss if you KNOW you are wrong
On the other hand....you have other fingers.

I'd call and simply say that I didn't own a Cougar. $25 is worth a phone call to me. It would be a simple charge to get dropped. Sure it was your fault, but shouldn't our law enforcement be accurate and precise? What happens when someone murders a family member and the cop radios to people they are driving something they aren't? That's just me though.

Focus people FOCUS
1st - we are talking about mistaken identity on a car
2nd - $25 is not going to be missed out of my pocket
3rd - Officers report Black Sub-Compact car with License # 123456, they only say what it is, when they are certain
4th - Description of car on a ticket is not important on a ticket, License # and ownership, and if moving violation then the Driver License #, But the description of car is not important. (at least in Calif)

i think thats funny, my buddy has a cougar and his doesnt look any thing like a J

If they only say what it is when they are certain then they must have been certain your "Black Sub-Compact car was a Mercury Cougar."

I don't care what you do, I just don't see your side. But different people are entitled to different opinions.

ive gotten camaro because of my ss hood
Nope, never had anyone mistake my car for anything other then what it was. Somehow, I can't understand how anyone could notice a Chevrolet Cavalier and call it Mercury Cougar. They don't look alike IMO and they're made from different companies. I could understand confusing a Dodge Neon and a Plymouth Neon but a Cavalier and a Cougar?

i think you fit the criteria... even if you did correct yourself...
and who the hell are you to say so?!?!?!?!? especially considering the fact that what you said is in no way related to the thread. not to mention i was running on about an hour of sleep for 30 some odd hours and had just gotten back from a really nasty EMS call. and what makes you sooooooo much smarter that you have the right to comment on my intelligence. btw how many brand names can you match to their manufacturer??? i would bet about 3 but ill be the one laughing when you get out of college and you get to fix my car. then we will see who fits the criteria. dick
