the other day i thought i saw a base model 03-05 4 door cavalier with painted handles
i want to paint my handles but the guy at the paint shop said that it would just chip off because they were plastic
what have you guys done o paint your handles, and does it hold up good.

when my car was painted the door handles were done and that was over 2 years ago and they've held up good so far
Visit me on Cardomain
02's 'n up had painted mirrors and door handles(only z's and ls sports though)
My 98 fire sedan came with black mirrors and handles, so know they were not color matched.
4 years ago i had all 4 door handles color matched(aqua) and i only ever put a little chip in one; probally from a rock.
If i were you, what ever shope told you they would just chip, that shope sucksand i would stay clear of them, i mean come on; a shope that can event paint door handles, that says it all right there, they must do some @!#$ty work, go to other shops, having handles paintted is nothing special; all shope should be able to do it and it is not exspensive.
98 j-body sedan
I had mine painted a little over a year ago and it has held up fine
how much did yours cost eternalone? that does look really good, plus i have had a few mishaps with waxing and its starting to gray the edges of my handles...

I payed about $150 after taxes at my shop. So thats about $75 for the handles and $75 for the mirrors. Not too bad, especially for a quality job. Most of the cost came from taping everything off to protect from the overspray. However, I removed the mirrors when I got those done so the painter could hit them with the paint really good.
i wouldnt mind getting my handles done... the mirrors could use it too i suppose... thanks for giving me something else to spend the money i dont have on... haha

150 bucks for MIRRORS AND HANDLES? @!#$ i'd just do it myself for that and buy something more productive with the cash

That might be true for some people, but hell, it did come with a full 3 year warrantee. $150 for full coverage on flaking, peeling, and fading is not bad at all IMO.
You get what you pay for.
I say it would be easier to get them painted man. Think of it this way, if you get some already painted you will have to worry about them matching your color red. Red is a very hard color to match if it is a little old.
I painted my handles myself last summer and so far I have no chips or cracks at all.
exactly a shop that can't paint plastics should not paint anything, the only difference in painting plastics vs. metal, is an adhesion promoter thats it... so if they say they can't do it they should go back to school... also any paint has the possibilty of chips plastics slightly more because they are more flexible, but if you get a little flex ad mixed with the paint and the clear it should not chip.
i have an 04 ls that came painted on handles and mirrors they look great then again they are factory. my buddy has a 04 fire and when you put the two together his is textured like a slight roughness to it and my painted are smooth as glass so they might have special order parts. also my other fiend has a geo and the handles were black and faded so we masked them off and painted them they came out like new no chipping. its all in the prep of the handles and the process you use to paint plastic. if you swap them out they dont bolt in they are riveted on so consider that. were are just gonna mix up some paint for the fire and spray the handles to match.
mine are holding up great!...my drivers side has been painted for years, and my passenger side was just redone a few months ago because i had to get a new door
i think itd be easier just to have them painted
the paint on my handles started chipping after about a year...they were done by the dealership...

Looks great. Did they sand the handles smooth, or just paint them as they were? I am looking to get my handles and mirrors painted as well, and I want them to look smooth. My handles btw are textured or whatever, definitely not smooth.
they make a clear coat now you can paint a rubber ball with, squeeze it when finished and the pait don't chip. go to a real body shop
Yeah they were sanded smooth. I couldn't be happier.
