Neons legal or illegal?
Sunday, March 11, 2007 2:07 PM
Looking over the street laws of california (where I live), it seems as though there is no information on neons. Now I never see anyone on the road with neons, infact I've only seen one car with neons on a public street in my whole life, and that was in a parking lot to a highschool at 2 in the morning while driving by. So I assume that it's probably illegal and all...right? Red and blue are definately illegal, but what about other colors like green...etc? And I live in San Diego county incase the laws are city specific.

Call your local courthouse and ask...that's what I did.

It depends from state to state. I know California is known to be VERY strict with car laws and limitations on mods. You're best bet is to call or check your state police for the information on this. Everyone told me that underbodies were illegal here in Illinois and I'd be "pulled over right away" . . . Yet I've had them installed almost 2 years now, driven past local, county and state police, and they just look over and keep going on their way. HOWEVER, my friend that used to have red ones on his cavalier, got pulled over with a warning for them. So they are illegal, but its one of those things that if the cops wants to give a ticket, he can. However, most won't care. Its kinda of a draw of luck I'm assuming.

Oh . . . Yes, blue and red are the ones that seem to draw the most attention with the law. Green, purple, white, etc usually doesn't. Like I said, its all up to the cop if he needs his quota, lol

Lmao, yea we all know the quota thing right? lol, drive past a cop going 80 on a 50 and think "OH, @!#$" and he doesn't even blink his siren, he just keeps on going cause' he doesn't want to deal with you. Other days, you'll be going 55 on a 50 and all cops within the area that need a quota and can hear your engine make a run for your car, lights flashing and all. Aside from that, I think I'll stick with not using neons since I pass atleast 5 to 8 cops per trip to/from work and to my girls house. Thanks all.

I know cali and il they are illegal. Its up to the cop if he wants to ticket ya or not. But the colors that are illegal due to emergency use are red blue and green. Others might not draw as much attention.

Then why exactly haven't I been pulled over by anyone in the past 2 years with my ridiculously bright blue ones? Like I said, I've driven past local, county and state, and they don't even acknowledge it. They look over, and continue on with their business. Its not like mine are barely noticable though. I don't have a bodykit, and I'm not lowered, so the light blasts out from under the car. The tubes are hidden, but with the car being stock height, it shines out quite a bit. Again, no one noticed. Given, you read about more tickets with the red/blue lights, but again, its all up to the cop if they want to.

white is legal from the front car door forward.
amber is legal anywhere.

Drive out to morris IL and you will get a ticket in a heart beat. Or drive down by joliet on i-55 and you will get ticketed. Cops in your area have better things to do then pull you over for neons.

Talked to my uncle who's a cop here in Iowa and he said that as long as you cant see the tube than you're ok. cops can pull you over and give you a ticket but judges will just throw them out in court. Also I asked him about having a quota and he said there is no such thing as having one.

I went from an import to being part of the J-Body nation.

the same goes here and they cannot be flashing or they will try to tag you with a impersonating a emergency vehicle, but its always fun to take the ticket to court and make the 5-0 look like a total tool bag when the judge reads the law code and laughs at the cop.

This tool of a cop was giving my friend a hard time about his blue neons another friend of mine who worked with the city of ft worth pretty much told the cop off. He told that as long as the bulbs are not visible from any angle they can be what ever color they want to be. Cop got an attitude with him called him boy and mind you he is 37, well needless to say he asked for his supervisors name and number to file a report on him. Cop didnt show up anymore that night. Like we are saying if the cop is a tool he will pull you over just to see if you got any tickets or warrants out on you. Keep the tubes hidden and your set check with the judges there to be sure though.

Actually Dufus in Dallas / Fort Worth you cant have any blue visibal lighting to the front or rear of the vehicle at all. This includes HIDs. If it is a non-OEM mod then it is ticketable. I used to work for the Police until i kicked my bosses ass and got put in jail myself. Son of a Bitch!

The big thing seems to be if the tube is visible. Which is ridiculous cause if you install them CORRECTLY, the tubes shouldn't be visible at all. Hence the whole point to have your car glow from underneath. I've seen them installed horribly where the tube is literally right under the side of the car with the whole tube visible and it looks dumb. I see a lot of underbodies installed around here, primarily with no tubes visible and everyone seems to go along with no tickets.

Like Shaggy said too, they can't be flashing. If any blue/red lights are flashing on the car, cops WILL pull people over for it. That includes LED's on the windshield sprayers, tire-caps, underbodies "pulsing with the music", anything hanging from the rear-view mirror that flashes or has a light on it, etc.

Lol, I'll call my local jailhouse when I get a moment and feel like it. Aside from that, I still don't know whether or not I will be getting neons since eventhough I won't get fined for it (assuming) it would still be an annoyance to be driving to my girlfriends house and get pulled over by some cop who just wan't to check out my driving record (which is a good thing, they catch a lot of dickheads like that). But I still don't want to be pulled over, so I guess I'll have to think about it, and if I do then I'm putting a switch in there too. I wonder if it's illegal to light up neons in parking lots if you're just sitting there? guess I'll have to ask the court person. Thanks all.

im surprised no one has mentioned installing an on/off switch inside the car. if you dont want to be pulled over turn them off, then you can just turn them on at a parking lot or car show.

you should be able to look up state laws for it online...print a copy and keep it in your car and when you get pulled over have the cop quote you it. then when he can't you read it to them and they generally turn around and go back to their cars and leave you alone. thats the other thing we did.

I mentioned to install a kill switch . . .

Yes, you can use them in parking lot, private property, etc without problem. You could have a 40ft high titanium spoiler hanging off your trunk, and as long as its in your driveway or a lot, they can't do anything about it. Now pull onto the street with it . . . it'll turn heads and they'll run for you, lol.
