Flat clear on CF hood.
Tuesday, April 10, 2007 6:20 PM
I was talking with a body guy about clearing my CF hood and he says if it was his car he wood put flat clear on it. I really like this idea as I am very into the old street rods and rat rods and I love the look of flat black paint. I also like the look of all the old muscle cars with flat black hoods. I was just wondering if anyone has ever done this before and how it looked. I think it would make the CF stick out even more because the surface wouldn't be so reflective so when you look at it you wouldn't just see the clouds and the trees and yourself.

Thanks!

Like the way my hood looks in my sig you cant see any CF because its just reflecting the sky and all the trees in my yard. If you couldn't see that so much I think the weave would stick out more.

think it will just look like a dull paintjob. if its what you want though go for it.

yeah... if you want that look, let the bastard sit out in the sun for an entire summer with no wax on it. you'll get ur "flat" look then!!!

Yes it will just look like a dull paint job thats why its called "flat" clear, thats the point. I want the surface dull so whats underneath shows through more. And leaving it outside all summer with no wax on it will also fade the carbon fiber along with making it very ugly and cloudy and I don't want to do that. This way its still nice and clear and you can see the fiber its just not so shiney that when you look at it all you see is your reflection looking back at you. And Like I mentioned I really like the look of flat paint, if I needed to paint the whole car it would be all flat.

I was just wondering if anyone else has tried this before.

Thanks and when I get it done I will put up some pics!

i dont think u should do it. it will just look weird as hell with a glossy car and a flat hood. just my 2 cents.

you'll never know till you do it. and if you don't like it, then you can always just put a gloss clear over it and call it done. going with the gloss first will make going the other way a lot harder if you decide you don't like the gloss so much.

I think a satin clear would look better, but it's your car so it's all up to you.

Wetsand it with 2000 grit, same effect.

The guy thats doing it has used flat clear a lot restoring old street rods and muscle cars and he said if it turns out to flat he can buff it and it gets a little bit of a shine to it. Wetsanding with 2000 grit probably does have the same effect but the reason I am clearing it is to get some protection from the sun so it doesn't keep fogging up and I don't have to keep waxing it once a week and worry about if its been parked in the sun to long.

Well it will be getting painted either tomorrow night or friday so I will have it on this weekend. But me and the wife went to pheonix last month and our camera disappered from our bag at the airport, nothing else was missing. So we don't have a camera anymore but I will get some pics as soon as I can. I think its gonna look sweet.
