How to mount a fiberglass fender flare
Wednesday, April 11, 2007 6:18 AM
I have a fender flare with a straight edge only to mount to the fender. Is there anyone out there that knows how this should be attached? It is a universal fiberglass flare.

I realize I would have to have pro do the molding but I would like to figure out how to mount it first. I was thinking making a ledge underneith where the flare will go. Not an easy one for me to figure out.

if you are going to let a pro do the molding then let him attach it too. the way to attach it is panel bonding. if you dont know how to do it just take it some where to get done. it would be much easier to let the guy who is molding it, bond it to the fender

if you go with rivets and panel bond.....i would follow these steps

1 - grind paint down to metal where it will be attached.
2 - line up flare and drill a bolt/screw thru the flare and thru/into the metal fender/quarter panel
3 - remove bolts/screws
4 - lay down layer of panel bond on the fender/quarter panel
5 - line up flare back to where it was bolted in.
6 - rivet back into place making sure edges are meeting panel bonded area
7 - run your finger over all seams to spread excess panel bond

panel bond has alot of working time so you dont have to worry about it hardening up on you. takes 24-48 hours to cure completely.
once its cured, it will be very well secured. then grind down excess hardened panel bond and the rivet heads

Can you use urethane? That stuff is strong too!

One problem is I do not have a lip coming down from the outside edges of the fender flare for any place to drill into. I am trying to meet up with some guy that does fiberglass and maybe he can put a lip on the flare so I can drill and use pop rivets plus the panel bond to secure it to the fender

Think that can be done by adding a lip to the fender flare? That is my dilemma as to how to mount these.

I am using a universal fiberglass flare so have to do some cutting and fitting before mounting.

im sure we can figure out an easy way to accomplish this

Hey Joey can you send me another e-mail address like Yahoo so I can send you a picture of the fender flare I want to install.
I tried the e-mail address on your profile and it came back to me.
Hope to hear from you!

Use sealent to attach the fender, then drill some screws to secure it and pressure it againt the fender, let dry for about 4hours. Then remove the screws and add bondo to the empty holes left behind. Beneath the fender flare once attached to the fender, drill some screws into the fender (permanent).
This makes a tight fit if you cant afford to mold them on.

Here are some pics, although it saved me some money, it sure does not beat a molded on fender flare. My flare was created (i think) by tabasco racing.com (4years ago).
