ok im getting ready to paint my cavy and wanting a cheap paint just to get it done so i can sell it. i know that dupont makes a cheaper brand called nason but doesnt ppg make a cheaper line also? is it called omni? please help...i remember using omni paint in school with good results and cant remember who manufactures it. thanks for the help guys.
Yes anywhere you can get ppg should mix you omni. omni seems to be half the price as ppg does, atleast where i get it from. I shot my interior with it to keep cost down on it, it looks just as good as the outside of my car to be honest. but i will also choose ppg for the exterior of a car. I heard that omni when exposed to alot of sunlight and other elements wont hold up as well. I dont know for sure, but it looks great in my interior. no pics of it yet though, so sorry there. maybe PM fallen angel with other questions, she knows alot when it comes to painting
Wait... in your profile it says 2004 is the year of your car??? May I first ask why it needs "repainted" before selling???
Yes PPG makes Omni...
I personally prefer DuPont, big daddy prefers PPG...
Cheaper isn't better...
and honestly, you might want to check out what the actual price difference on the paint is. If you can get say DuPont for not much more than Nason, it would be nice if you did it right so the person buying the car doesn't get jipped... ESPECIALLY if the car you're selling is your 2004. Don't be a jerk and cheap out on paint on a car that new.
Then again, I don't know what your painting skills are like either... although I'd feel safe to assume that since you're asking this question and haven't discovered the answer for yourself, not too good.
Just please don't ask for a "how to" painting tutorial... there's reasons WHY we won't write up a tutorial in my sticky at the top of the forum.
Not trying to be a biotch or come off short so please don't take it that way...I jjust have a killer headache
Ive used ppg omni on my interior as well and it came out very good..the one tip i got for using omni clear is to get the good ppg hardener..other than that go for it..phil
correct ppg makes omni, so why not do this ppg still produces the dbu system and the omni clear works great over it, no matter how ya look at it even with omni or using the dbu or dbc system price shold be about the same so why not use the dbu system and use omni clear
dont skimp on paint products you will kick your self in the cock sucker when your painting your car

Take it to maco it like $350 for them to do it,then put your car in autotrader.
maco? whats that? where? it needs repainted because of a wreck. wouldnt need a whole job but ive swapped doors for power and a few minor dents and dings just from normal wear. thanks for everyones help. i was pretty sure that it was ppg that made it. i just couldnt remember cause its been almost a year since i graduated from my collision repair. oh and for those that doubt my painting ability i graduated with an a- simply because i missed a few more days than i should have due to my job. i was second in my class and most cars i done were for the teacher of the class and the higher up jobs we had come through the shop. my teacher that i done his cars, he was a huge perfectionist and my friend who grad first and i were the only two to work on his stuff. same here not trying to be an ass but dont like to be put down by someone who dont know me or my ability. but again i say thanks for the advice i may end up steping up to the ppg or possibly as mentioned dupont. i do want it to turn out good because it is being looked at by a few people who want me to do work and want to see my personal car and how it turns out first. thanks peace

350? For a complete spray the lowest I've ever heard of was 850, no bodywork... As well, orange-peel clearcoat... Honestly, Maaco is the paint equivalent of Jiffy Lube...

FOR THE BILLIONTH TIME ORANGE PEEL IS NORMAL!!!!!! IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO SPRAY CLEAR COAT AND GET ABSOLUTELY NO ORANGE PEEL!!! ORANGE PEEL IS NOT AN IMPERFECTION IT'S TOTALLY NORMAL!!!! with few exceptions... you CAN have too much orange peel as in the paint finish will look more like a matte photograph and isn't really shiny... or something like that. But just because there's orange peel doesn't mean it's a bad paint job.
Go to any car lot... EVERY CAR THERE OFF THE FACTORY LINE has orange peel. It's normal...
Sorry... It just angers me when people don't do their research before commenting... especially when it comes to things like orange peel and such... in fact I do believe it's mentioned in my sticky at the top of the forum.
I will agree however that Maaco is the paint equivalent of Jiffy Lube...
MACO is a body shop chain in F.L not too much better than a local auto tech schools, they will paint your car 1 panel at a time or the whole thing at once sometimes overnight. Its not the best paint job in the world but they don't charge too much more than cost of materials, and I was guessing based off a job my friend with a MX-6 got for $875ish but they put his body kit on for him to.
Orange peel can be avoided if you clear and wet sand like a motha with 2500 grit and buff buff buff
Only ChipFoose has NO orange peel on ANY of his cars, even his black is perfect.
I wish I could double the value of a car with just the paint.

You CANNOT avoid orange peel... you can only "get rid of it" by wetsanding/buffing... it can't be avoided.
Even Chip Foose cannot SPRAY a car with no orange peel... it's wet sanded and buffed...
Orange peel is normal... and unless you own or want a show car... what in the hell is the big deal with orange peel?!?!?!?!?
Are people really this stupid?!?!??!?! How can anyone say "orange peel is a bad thing"... when all they have to do is friggin look at 99.99999% of all cars on the road to see that EVERY FRICKEN ONE has orange peel?!?!?! (minus those cars who are show cars, and wanted the "glass" look)
Gosh people... do your research before you open your mouth please...
well his painter is charlie not chip foose, she is correct guys even porches, even ferrari, even lamborgini iam sure spelled wrong but anyway they even have orange peel yes they do i have seen them worked on them
what i do is clear the car 2 coats, let it dry sand it down with 1,500 re clear the car 3 more coats sanding and buffing takes off almost 2 coats
no matter if you have the best made gun in the world orange peel will never be avoided never!!!!!

im not that worried about orange peel myself, i unlike others here, realize as was said that it is normal. it can be minimized and that is my intention.
Maaco is a franchise company. I do not recommend Maaco unless you do all of your prep work yourself before taking it to them. Most of them do not do things the way they should be done. They cut corners and most do not remove moldings, lighting, etc.. Also Maaco is known for their cheap jobs because a lot of those jobs are done with single stage paint not base/clear. I have never seen a paint job without orange peel. Like Fallen Angel said, only ones you will see without orange peel are cars that have been wetsanded and buffed.

My large bolded letters about the orange peel comments were not directed at you... because you were not the one incinuating that orange peel is a bad thing... just to clarify lol

I still wouldn't recommend Maaco in that case... a lot of their jobs ARE single stage correct... the ONLY way I would recommend them (and I believe the only time I have recommended them) was when a guy pulled his moldings off and had some paint chipped down to the metal, but couldn't afford or didn't want to repaint his whole doors at that time... I recommended Maaco as a temp cheap fix to protect what metal was showing through until he could fix it right.
Maaco = the devil
and yes... the reason no one has seen a car roll out with fresh paint WITHOUT orange peel is because orange peel is normal and is not a bad thing... so the reason no one has seen a car like that is because it doesn't exist. (I'm not saying YOU don't know that or didn't get the point, I just figured I'd stress that for those with thicker skulls)
My orange peel combatant....Anesta Iwata....hahaha...I am in love with them for shooting clear, such a beautiful spray pattern. Sata RP with a 1.4 fluid tip I have found to be a pretty good clear gun. Fallen Angel, what is your weapon of choice?
Some Maaco shops are reliable for spot work. I recently worked at one that did a really good job with small spot jobs and smaller collision repair jobs. In those cases everything was done correctly and I'm pretty sure all spot jobs were done with Chromabase paint. It's a franchise tho so it still all depends on the individual shop and the owner/workers.
As far as gun of choice I still like Iwata guns.

I actually like Satas and Iwatas... either of those two and I'm fine lol. Otherwise it depends on what size of an area i'm spraying, what i'm spraying (specialty paints or no?), and what kind of mood I'm in... odd... but depending on what mood i'm in that day depends on what gun wwill cooperate with me more it seems LOL
Hey... you're not an ACTUAL mechanic/body repair tech/painter until you've gotten into at least one fight with the equipment you're using LMAO
PPG Platinum Distributors carry Shopline also, which to my understanding is more or less Omni paint and pretty reasonable. Since you're selling Omni base/clear should fit the bill and not cost too much if you're doing the work, but whether or not you'll make up to cost in the selling price is another story depending on what shape the car is in. Personally I'm leery of a car that's been painted just because I don't know what lies beneath.
Micah, did you ever take a good look at my rear spoiler after getting it painted? DBC base with DCU clear and it layed FLAT! I know it's pretty much impossible to not have any orange peel, but it's pretty close. Definately smoother than the factory paint and DBC base color matches pretty good too.

Was the spoiler painted on a FLAT surface? Was it laying flat when it was sprayed? That does a lot to "minimize" orange peel...
most car surfaces arn't flat however... cars are too curvy

Yeah it was removed and painted flat on a special (homemade) jig.
