question about those electronic rust protector gizmo's....

Well, I'm not sure if this would be the right forum for this to be posted, but it has to do with exterior mainly, so I figured this one is the best suited area for the question.

I work at a parts store, and a few days ago we got this fax from our warehouse saying something about a device that is now available to all shops. It worked by putting some kind of a charge on the vehicle or something, and it's suppose to prevent rust from starting, and stop rust that has already started, from spreading. I thought this thing sounded too good to be true. For $220, I would definitely buy one to protect my car, but I'm unsure as to how well these actually work, as, like i said, it sounds too good to be true. Has anyone has any actual experience with any brand of these electronic rust protection things? If so, please, let me know, because if there's one thing i hate to see on my car, it's rust.

hmm, sounds interesting. rusting is an electrochemical reaction that produces a slight voltage, so maybe by trying to force electron flow the other way it might prevent the reaction from occurring. or they just want $220 of your money. but to me it sounds reasonable.

Yes yes something like that. I was hoping maybe someone had personal experience with it, before I go ahead and get my boss to order one up for me.

I had one on a old Ford Truck, it worked great....not a spot of rust on it, the engine died before the body was bad.

I've got one installed... though how are you really supposed to tell if it's working.. you can't very well compare it to another car to see which one has more rust. All I know is it makes an annoying high pitched, quiet beeping noise. Old people can't seem to hear it, but it drives me crazy if I've got the hood open lol!

bf's parents have one on their civic, personally I don't think it works at all, but they've only had it for little under a year, time wil tell that tail. They seem to think it keeps the car clean as well apparently hahaha yea no it doesn't ... lol Rust maybe, dirt no ...

Seems way to sketchy to me. The best rust prevention is regular maintenance... i.e. cleaning the car regularly, making sure it's protected, undercoating, and if you get a rock chip or scratch or anything where there's metal showing... get it fixed PROPERLY ASAP.

Problem is, I already have rust. Quite a bit. I wanted a method of preventing it from rusting further while I save up the funds to get the rust properly removed and repaired. Oh well, looks like I'll need to figure something else out

I have one...and I got rust after about 10 years. My dad has one on his truck, and his brakes lines started rusting, as well as everything else on the truck.

I'm gonna have to agree, they don't really work, and, proper cleaning of, and upkeep of paint and undercoat is what will prevent rust.

they wouldn't prevent rust in any case, just really slow it down.
