Diamond White Pearl Paint job
Tuesday, May 01, 2007 10:51 AM
I got my car in the booth getting Toyota/Lexus Diamond White Pearl for $1,111.01. I like this color a lot simply because it stands out a lot more than the stock paint due to the pearl in the paint and it shines a lot.

Anybody like this color? I been wating it for a long time.

ROFL!! The paint shop just called me about my paint. They told me that my original estimate of $1,111,01 was too cheap. The owner called me on my cell phone and said that a White Diamond Pearl paintjob is a very exspensive job and it originally is supposed to start at $3,000 to do. Luckily though, he told me to not worry because the price on the estimate is all I'm gonna have to pay, but next time I will be quoted for $3,000 if I come back for it again. They guy that quoted me the $1,111,01 almost got fired, lol.

This is the color if anyone wanted to know.

I'm a little curious on something. What color is the car right now? If something other then white, are they also doing your door jams, and engine bay, or no? You are damn lucky though to get it for that price. Doing paint jobs like that isn't cheap, but a lot of that has to do with the fact that the paint is not cheap. Adding things like flake and mettalics can really just drive the price up. I plan on painting my own car, and I still plan on spending a lot of money. I haven't decided exactly what I want to do yet, but I know that whatever it is, simple or not, I will end up spending a lot just on the paint.

My car is already white. Olympic white to be specific. Also, I am getting the jambs done too. The only thing I am not getting done is under the trunk lid. I plan on getting a Toyota trunk liner for that. I myself know that this type of paint job isn't cheap, but hell.. the guy who quoted me messed up and I already signed the contract for it and told me they won't change they price cause it was their fault.

well then they can do it again. He's paying for it to be done right. Just because they quoted him wrong doesn't mean they can half *ss it. Their is a chance that they will try to, but that doesn't mean they for sure will.

Agreed! When I was quoted for my Type J kit to be painted I got about $800 for front, sides and rear. The owner called me and said it was going to be about $1500 and the guy made a incorrect estimate. I said I have it in writing...$800!

Well low and behold the paint started to bubble in a few places and they had to redo the entire kit again! So in the long run had they done it right the first time they would have been out less money! But they cheaped on the first paint job and ended up redoing it all over the right way!

I told them I'd be back because they said 2 year warranty!

Eh...old man with a Corvette now...it was bound to happen sooner rather than later right?

they could put the pearl in the clear tho and no one would EVER know..

well if no one would ever know, and it wasn't crappy quality, then he got what he wanted. If they don't specify how they are going to do it, and it comes out nice, then they did there job. every company is going to try and do things cost effective. it doesn't matter if they do it cheaper (not cheap, but cheaper), as long as the end result is good. If you can't tell the difference, and it doesn't really effect anything, then did it really matter how they came to the end result, as long as they didn't do anything that would ruin. I would personally inspect the car, and make sure it is quality work, and as long as i was satisfied, i would drive the car home.

Well, here is the deal, I just bought paint for the color that is going down on my car....500 dollars, at cost, cheaper than ANY body shop can even begin to dream of as far as prices go. Reason I got it smaso cheap is cuz I go to Wyotech, and they changed over from PPG to Sherwin Williams, and they needed to get rid of the paint that they had in the parts store. Straight from the PPG regional rep, we got the paint cheaper than any bodyshop in the country could get it. I got a gallon of basecoat...black, gallon of clear, gallon of DBC 500, which is what the pearl will be mixed in and sprayed as a tristage, and a bottle of pearl. Products arent cheap, then I got some reducers/hardeners/solvents that I will need. But the moral of the story is....a body shop couldnt do a tristage paint job for 1100 dollars...no possible way. After labor/sandpaper/masking paper/tape/paint products/price to run the booth. No way, I would look out, the bodyshop will deffinatly be looking for ways to cut this one short. I would be there everyday making sure everything is being done right. If I would go and do a job like this for a customer....it deff. wouldnt be under 4000. And this fool above me is crazy, once body work is involved, now you have fillers/primers/sealers to factor into the cost. I wouldnt even take my car near a shop that quoted me 500 for body work and a complete these days, jsut cant be done. Also, a big price savings that can go on is if they use a real cheap clear. PPG omni can be bought for like...80 dollars a gallon compared to a quality clear which runs about 250-300 a gallon. This isnt a place that you want to save money, cheap clears dont have as many UV protectors, and chip like a mother fu**er. Lesson learned, dont go cheap, you will pay for it in the long run, and wont be happy. Either do it yourself to save the money, or just shell out the cash.

the old "I got a friend painting my whole car for $500 story" Well us "friends" that happen to do body work need to eat aswell as you need to eat by saving money on your paint job. I did that @!#$ for 5 years everyone wants a freebie when they know a bodyman.. and the clear i use is $300 a gallon. Sure alot of people opt out for the $90 a gallon stuff or even cheaper. the average person probably couldnt tell the difference but thats the difference between a ok paint job and one where the clear looks 3 inches deep and ohh so shiney.
