I'm at the point where i want to finalize my body work before paint. My question is for everyone who has or had experience w/ shaved handles.
My questions are:
- reliability? Do you have trouble w/ the selenoids going out?
- do you ever get sick of it?(as in a pain in the ass to not have a handle to get in?)
..also, would appreciate input for quality products who people have had experience with. Thanks everyone~
I'm in the same boat. Listening...
personly it was awsome at first like show it off to everyone and stuff but now its just like yea i have shaved handles. Its not a PITA to me and i havn't had a problem yet in mine. I have the Autoloc 40lbs kit from Jason @ Aplus

see that's the thing, the guy painting my car personally has his locks shaved, and he told me NOT to do it cuz he just got sick of it. He's even considering buying doors from a yard just to put handles on...which is keepin me from doing it
I mean obviously its clean as hell looking and its an eye catcher, but i just don't wanna get sick of it, nor have probs w/ it
I have them on all my cars and trucks. One time i had one of them go out but the passenger side one still worked and i used that one to get in for 2 days till i got it replaced. LOVE THEM!
I had shaved doors. Loved them. Even thought about it (for a minute) in my new F-body...
My solenoids never acted up... Even worked from 6 houses away. I loved the clean look, personally, and never had an issue mechanically.
i have the spal kit too. never had a problem at all. i even hooked up my air suspension on it. its funny scaring people with it when they walk by my car
Everything is better Shaved!
seeing as you're torn between the two, if you have power locks just paint the handles and shave the lock only.
i use spal kits and never a problem with them, i love the simple look and always love a shaved handle, i still love mine and always will
can i haz bondo
if you do it, be different. Do the same set up like the new Corvettes
That would be pretty damn cool.

not to persuade you one way or the other because i love shaved handles but i was right in the middle of shaving mine got one side done short of welding in the plate and they said it wouldnt pass inspection i went to several places and they said the same thing but anyway so i just painted mine and shaved the locks so just a little something to check out

In the 2.5 years I've had them on my sedan, the only problem I ever had was my driver's side solonoid freezes in the winter. It won't work until it gets arm enough inside the car to warm the solonoid. It doesn't happen very often, but it gets annoing when it's really cold.

No way! It makes me lazier
All you do is push 4 buttons to open 4 doors - no fumblimg w/ keys in the dark.

I have the SPAL kit and bought it from A1electric or something like that (they were cheaper than A+ @ the time) and I have no regrets w/ shaving the handles!
Alright personally i do not have shaved handles, but my best friend has his handles shaved on his blazer extreme. Looks absolutely beautiful, but i haven't seen more problems with this than anything else. He luckily has access to body shop at any given time, due to his father owning one, but back to the point, he has gone through like 3 different selenoids on each door and is having to continuosly crawl through the back to get in his car, which is going to just suck b@**s if your trying to do that in a J. I understand that these doors are probably going to weigh a lot more than doors do on any cavy, but i am just saying that IMO... its not worth the effort unless your planning on just taking the car to shows or doing a fix up on your doors every know and then.
go with a spal kit very reliable ive yet to hear anything bad about them. ive heard allot of bad from the autoloc kits. so a bad door popper can be the cause of allot of problems. that and a good installation. poor installation will result in poor performance so remember that when u go to put them in. i just finally got mine done and im happy with them so far. course i dont daily drive my car anymore.

if you dont want to shave the doors but you want a clean look why not just install flush handles?
So how many people have had trouble with the solenoids freezing up during winter time?
I have the Spal 30lb kit on my DD and i love it! I would suggest it to anyone
oh and i have had it for over 2 years and still love them
I enjoyed them on the old cav.
Stay away from Autoloc though. There are a lot of bad stories about them. I had an Autoloc kit, and one day my driver's side just crapped out on me. The "Stellar" alarms that come with them are crap too.
IMO, get a nice alarm and some Spal solenoids.
If you aren't sure about having the handles shaved right away, just hook the popper to the door without removing the handle. This lets you test them out, while not having to commit to the body work aspect just yet. .
