Alright, for those who have installed a carbonfiber or fiberglass trunk, has the tension bars set on the lowest tension been enough to keep the trunk from shooting up when opened? I dont want it popping up so quick it starts cracking where ti bolts down from the force, and i also dont want it to look like its a catapult... I was just curious on what others have experienced?
You could pop off one of the tension bars...I did on my steel 2nd gen trunk lid and it took a helluva lot of force to lift that bastard with a spoiler and the tails...
Yes. The trunk will fly open FAST even at the lowest tension.
I forgot that, and hit my key fob and BAMN...that thing shot up so damn fast.
Dave thats similar to a idea i was thinking of
and vince, yeh thats what i figured would happen.
Here was my idea, taking some steel, and bolting the arms like a crossmember. possibly two in different spots on the arms or maybe in a X pattern and bolt them together also where they meet, this keeping the arms connected as 1, then remove one of the tension bars. so the tension on one arm might be enough and just lift them both up being them bolted together.. Now to me thats not a problem to have, but i know for show and stuff it might not look the greatest but i dunno. just a idea i had.. i dont want my carbonfiber trunk to get messed up considering ClassGlass dont make them anymore, and also a buddy of mine just bought a ViS one yesterday so were both trying to figure something out..
i tried removing the tension bars and it moved around too easily so i had to be gentle when closing it or it wouldnt line up properly. now i just hit the button when im next to it and i put my hand on it to ease it open. or hit the button on the inside and run to the back since it takes a second to un-latch. lol. that must look pretty funny.
ive been wondering this myself, as it even makes on hell of a difference when u just take off a spoiler off the trunk lid, i know my 97 did it anyway, it didnt have the spoiler and that freakn lid would knock you the @!#$ out of you were standing above it when it got released lol
hmmm, this sucks, i was just planning on removing the bars all together, but if they are needed for alignment structure and such, that blows
i guess i will adjust them to the lightest setting and pop the trunk with my fob and hold it myself.
atleast thats the problem i had. when i took my stock spoiler off, the stock trunk it flew up pretty good too. but now with the glassed trunk w/cobalt ss wing, that thing would knock you out if you were leaning over it. lol. ive luckily rememberd everytime i hit the button to only do it with my hand above the trunk but my boyfriend forgot once and i swear i thought the trunk was just gunna fly right over the car :p i guess its something you get used to tho, doesnt really bother me.
Yeah it will pop up quick but I always just make sure to have my hand on top of the lid and then just let it hit my hand and slowly let it up. I remember someone hooking up a spring to the arm to make it go up slower but I can't remember all of the details.
i pulled my bars out and just built prop rods for shows. but it tends to be a PITA when not at shows and getting in the trunk

Interesting, i woulda never thought about alignment and keeping it steady. thanks for the insight Jess

yeh, when mine fell out when i had my shaved trunk it was a pita..
odds are i will try my bracing and removing on tension bar, being it is reversable, if it fails ill just do what has been mention just bout catching it with your hand.
Thanks guys
I don't have experience with carbon fiber or fiberglass trunks, but this might work. I just picked up a trunk lid liner from a toyota cavalier. After installing, my stock trunk doesn't raise more than 3 inches when i pop it. I guess the question would be whether or not the aftermarket trunks had the required mounting holes.

A more accurate observation has never been typed. These should be the starting points before any serious performance modification. What's the point of making a serious performer if you can't control it's power?

trust me i know how u feel with the cf trunk ,tired a few things but nothing would work rite so i always have my hand over the trunk and lifted up after like mentioned before
I forget how the verts open, but think someone used those hinges to fix this. I'm really not sure, but someone help me if I'm right.
i was thinking the same thing. i know the hinges mount in the 2 and 4 door cavs. and i dunno about the fires. but that might look nicer and function better than just bracing it with more metal.
vert hinges dont fit, i already tried those last year. in order for tehm to work i would have to redrill the mounting holes to the rear deck to have it sit bout 2" further back in order to have the scissor hinge from getting caught on the jam. and i dont really wanan drill up the rear deck on account it could throw off alignment of the trunk sitting out to far but i dont know for sure.
small gas shock maybe. something for a hatch, or even lighter duty than that?
