Anyone thought of this?
Sunday, May 20, 2007 7:28 PM
I have an idea for my car. I dont want to buy a whole body kit. I was thinking about maybe just getting just some sideskirts or I might not even get those. But the main reason for my post is I was thinking about removing the grill insert on the front bumper and replacing it with mesh like the pic I photochopped. Any opinions? Anyone done this? How hard is it to remove the old grill piece? I know it will look better once I lower the car if I do this mod. Thanks for any info.

No offense, but it would be hard to make that not look like a hack job.

Can be done and I believe it has been done already on a white cavalier same year range as yours.

I think if you took you time, it would look alright. Possibly roll the edge or use a 1/2 aluminum strip around the edge for mounting

Yeah. It could be made to look good. Thats why I was asking how hard it is to remove the old piece. I would think that would be a part that is possibly replaceable. So maybe it would be bolted on or it could be molded in. I'm not sure about the construction of the bumper.

To remove the stock grill, you have to use a razor blade or a dremel. Otherwise it's not removable.

If your good with a dremel or cutoff wheel, just follow the line in the bumper where the grill meets the bumper, and put mesh. To hold down the mesh which I persume will be put on the back side of your bumper use OEM hot glue industrial strength. Its looks like a yellow glue stick but is used for car installs and makes a very strong bond. You can find that at Select Products Dont over due it though cause you can melt your bumper using this stuff since most Cavalier bumpers are PP. Thats the only thing I can think of right now to secure the mesh to the bumper without fabing brakets for it.

What if I can get you a stock z24 kit ? I think that would be much better! I have a friend back home that might have a z24 kit (cayenne red) or at least the stock bumpers. I'll check with him.

That makes the base bumper even uglier.

I'm not a fan of the stock 2.2 bumper, but if you do the mesh, get some z24 bumper signal lenses. They are clearish and would accent the mesh grill a bit. Just dont forget the amber bulbs, wouldnt want you to get a ticket

if you dont want to shell out for a full body kit, do this ^^^ and get the z kit. IMO will look 100x better than trying to put mesh in your smiley face 2.2 bumper.

I'm liking Micah's idea for the z24 kit. I'm gonna see what happens with that before I do anything since hes not far from me. Thanks for all the info everyone.

I'll check on that pretty soon. A friend of mine bought a z24 with a drift kit, and may have gotten all the stock parts with it. I may try giving him a call tonight and see if he has the z kit.

the only reason you should ever cut that out is to fit a intercooler behind it

I used to have mine like that it is a B*tch to get to stay in there, I am more towards racing now so I removed it for weight and more air flow. It looks alright I guess.
