sorry for all the questions - bodykit time
Tuesday, June 05, 2007 2:32 PM
im buying my type J bodykit next wednesday. in my doing so, i realized im going to be shelling out a lot of money for the kit, and painting it and getting everything ready. i would like to try and save some money on installation if at all possible. knowing this, i have a few questions for you

1. is installing a bodykit easy enough for a beginner/ moderately intelligent human being to do at home? -with proper tools of course.

2. my car has never had any lip kits or side skirts. the side skirts may mean i will have to drill into my frame under the door panels to mount the skirts... or are the black plastic circles on there already "pre-fabbed" cutouts for skirt installation

3. if this is not a rookies type job, would anybody in or around maryland be able to help me install this bodykit?

4. this is a eurathane kit, i believe im going to leave the painting to the pros, but will i need any modification to the intergrity of my car for the type J kit to fit properly? i.e. cutting/ removal of front and rear absorbers? will they need cut? or will they fit correctly... or as close to as possible...

5. if you live in maryland, and would be willing to help me out on this endeavor. please pm me. or leave a reply here.
i want to do this right. but between the money for the kit, and the paint for the kit. i need to save somewhere... i would like an overall A- on the complete project... and im not trying to break the bank..

thanks guys

I'm in the same position as you, getting my kit prepped for paint.

It's a little worse for wear on the underside but the top is ship shape. Physically after fitting for a second time I can get both front/rear bumpers and sideskirts off under an hour. Probably same mounting holes between type J and buddy club 2 so yes you can do it, just give it a shot.

Removed crush guards completely, just too much of a pain. Can always get them from a junker at the yard if you ever need to go back to stock.

Sorry I'm in Jersey

ticket?

its a 2000 base coupe. i found a bunch of black plastic cap type things along the bottom of the body. i dont know what they are there for... i assumed Z skirts or something of the like... but thanks for the quick replies

oh and the impact absorbers... im removing the rear one because its broken anyway thanks to a rear end impact. - idiots in mazdas...
i guess i should ditch the front one tooo... only problem is, i dont think the parents will like my car being even less safe than a stock J. haha... anybody got any excuses as to what those are doing being removed from the car in case they ask? i was going to say, there is a built in absorber panel in the front and rear bumpers...

I think the excuse you have right now is pretty good, or tell them it wont fit under the new bumpers... And by the ticket statement above, around where I live I have to do the body work out on the street since i dont have a garage... Over the years I've found out cops can be pricks on some days and give you a verbal warning or give you a ticket for whatever they like

if i need some help with this project ill be in jersey... haha

about the installation on the street... thats bull**** i had that issue when i was on campus... no oil changes, no engine cleaning, no wax... i did it anyway, i just had my friend the security guard watch out for me, i did some electrical work on his motorcycle and he was always nice to me after that

i know this project wont be very soon... i still need to get some more money for painting... i hate being poor.

installing kits is simple and the fact that its urethane makes it easier. urethane fits better than fiberglass. should only take about 2 hours to do the whole install.

I know it sucks a$$, but I think I might just go ahead and install the front and rear bumpers of my type j kit tommorow. And leave the IF sides for the shop to do when i get it painted. If i get a ticket so be it I just want to get that kit installed already lol

i dont know if the law changed, but I know a few years ago when me and my brother were working on his 98 eclipse. A cop stopped us and told me and him its illegal to work on your car out in the street he gave us a warning. Saying the next time he see's us working on our car out in the street he'll give a fine... Since then I've been going to a garage so I can work on my car but now I have noone around me with one and my neighbors are pricks as it is lol. But yea tommorow Ill hopefully have the front and rear put on since today I was semi-what busy

i believe your allowed to work on your car in the street as long as your not doing things like oil changes or what not where oil or other kinds of fluids can leak on the ground.

if anybody would like to lend a hand, it wont be for a while... but the kit has already been fitted to a 2000 cavalier... so fitment should not be an issue. ill let you all know after it has been painted when i would like to install it... depending on the paychecks it should happen like this... im getting it on wednesday, and then about two weeks after that i should be getting it painted... and then ill give them atleast a week... so probably toward mid july for installation. ive also got a few odds and ends i would like to tie up before I install... such as my dead valve cover gasket, and fuel filter... other than that im getting my clear corners soon (saturday) and then M3 mirrors IN BLACK whenever they come back in stock. i may have them painted to match the car, assuming i can get them before i take the kit to the paint shop (opinions about painted non OE mirrors?)

bubba. if you want to come to maryland i have a buddy with a hydrolic lift, and a garage... so ya dont get a ticket... although gas would probably cover the ticket anyway... haha

make sure you test fit the kit before you install it. it could require some tweaking to fit your car. remember not all kits fit the same on every car.
