just finished collecting all the pieces for my drift kit. now i got a front and a rear that have not been fitted at all (brand new). i know i need the stock hardware but does anyone have any tips to make this easier? like bit sizes, tips, tricks? anything will help.
take everything off. test fit the bumpers and make where the bolts go. then drill small pilot holes for the bolts and just thread the bolts through.
what size holes should i drill? like what size bit? and when you say take everything off, your just talking about the front fascia correct? not the crush guard.
correct but the crush guard will have to be trimmed to make the bumpers fit right. as far as the drill bit size, i usually pick a drill bit that is a little bit smaller than the bolt. this way when you go to put the bolt in with a socket, the bolt will thread its way through the hole and it will be a nice tight fit.
btw you might wanna pick up some L brackets for your rear, your gonna need it.
yeah i know all about the rear bracket deal. only thing i have a real question left about are the sideskirts.
i got them already drilled out. my question is whenever i figure out a way to mount them, do i fiberglass over the screws? or how do i hide how its mounted.
no real way to hide how its mounted. paint the heads of the screw the color of your car and they wont stand out as much. other than that there is no real way. fiberglassing over them will only make it that much harder to remove
When installing the drift rear on a 96" do i have to trim that white foam peace to fit in the bumper or does it just get installed with out it and some l-brackets?
that is the crush guard (different year cavs have different style crush guards) and yes it has to be trimmed back far enough that the bumper will fit.
everybody elses pics i see there hidin nicely... i didnt even know they used screws.
theres no way of hiding screws when attaching side skirts unless they are molded in.
Cut the bumpers in half. Sand gel-coat approx 4 inches from each edge you've cut.
Line each side up accordingly with the OEM mounting hardware (where-ever possible).
Drill any holes needed for mounting.
Mount and secure kit.
Line up each bumper's two halves and tape to hold in place.
Apply 2-3 layers of fiberglass to outside bumper where the cuts were made and overlap 2-3 inches (don't go past the sanded area).
Apply a few layers fiberglass inside bumper where cuts were made for additional strength.
Sand surface to get rid of rough/high spots.
Apply Filler.

Stand back and enjoy your original Drift Kit by Street-Weapon, red tinted resin and all.
what grit should i use to sand used fiberglass parts... i figure 1200 wet sand on the new pieces cause there in great shape, but what about the used skirts? start at 80?
what are you trying to do?
LOL... If you are responding to my post, any who has been around long enough to remember Street Weapon should also know of the fitment issues.
At first, I attempted to fix the individual issues by either bending the bumper some to fit where it should or by sanding and glassing small areas of the bumper. After that failed, I cut my bumpers in half, mounted them, and then fiberglassed them back together. This was much faster, and should keep the bumpers in better condition since they won't be under any pressure.
this is how my sides looked,....i just pre fitted them to know where im gonna drill...pain in the ass id have to say
the drift and blitz are pretty much the same except the front end. front kit is gonna be easy,..just remove the rubber things,..

Depending on how ur fitment is for ur side skirts u might want to mold them in, cause i kno after drilling mine in, the sorta bent outward n didnt look flush.
started to fit front last night... should i cut down the crush guard or just remove it? i heard you cut off about 80% of anyway..
also where di i get new push pins for the front....
do not prep your kit. let the shop who is painting the kit prep it.
as far as the crush guard, do what you want. yes you have to trim alot of it off. its up to you if you want to remove it or not.
i plan on painting it... so im prepping it... yeah im trying to learn to do body work
well if you never painted before, try preping and painting smaller things first. i really wouldnt start on a kit. its good you wanna learn to do it but i think starting on a kit might be rough.
ive already done one of the b-pillars and it came out nice... im trying fenders this weekend
going to paint the car one panel at a time... so i know its right...
