Just Checking in for an update the carbon fiber Roof. I have been wondering about the longevity of this. How has it lasted for the two guys on this board that did it themselves?
Anyone know?

blu sold off the car/pieces, never finished the project
jnight wrecked I believe, or sold out one or the other.
You should take a look at sykeeoks post in P&M he did his roof and it came out great i have seen up close and it really looks awesome. I dont think he has any problems with his craking or bubbling

big changes coming in 07
i know J-Knight had issues with it turning yellowish and i think he also had peeling/bubbling issues due to constant sunlight and the heat generated from underneath(inside the cabin) to the metal

correct
Yes it did yellow just like any Carbon will if you don't clear it and protect it right. I think it was the resin he used. You are wrong on the point that it bubbled due to heat, but it was that the roof was not full metal and had filler under the Carbon he didn't know about till afterwards. He stated that the first owner must of had the body work done.
^^^ahhh, that would make sense

I thought I would help out and explain everything that I know.
u dont need to re-clear carbon fiber to keep the nice finish, it simply needs waxed often. done and done.
Or you could clear it and not have to wax it so often.
an auto clear with a UV protectant is the best idea for c/f exterior parts
I looked into doing this but instead just went to a body shop and got my roof painted the closest color to carbon as possible, very happy with the results. Looks better in person.
better pics? im not sure what the "closest color to carbon" is, other than black?
probably something like gunmetal, or something similar to it, BTW wasp that looks great, love the contrast
^ ^ ^ Thanks, I will get some better pics as soon as I can. The color we used was off of a color strip from what they said was a "color 2 system" that they use, so there is just a code for the color to work with their machine instead of an actual name for it like a manufacturer would use. It is really close to the HOK PBC-43 pearl black. If you go just black it wouldn't be a close match because carbon fiber is not just black.

yeah man do you have better pics? looks really good from that pic though. i thought about having cf vinyl put on the roof but if you have better pics and a paint code, that would work great! how much was it just to paint the roof?

It was $400 to get the roof done, but the clear coat was coming off of the top of the drivers side door so that was repainted too. So it would be a little less for you to get just the roof done. I have to get the code, but keep in mind it's not a normal paint code. I will get some better pics when I get my camera back.
damn, $400 to paint a roof?
damn close to materials cost for my whole car inside and out
If you have CF engine bay pieces, SELL THEM TO ME!

Yeah, I had it done at a shop that is known for doing quality work. It was worth it to me to spend a little more to get it done right the first time. Like I said it looks bad ass in person, could not be happier.
Jnight32 did wreck his, about 3 years ago. He is a Scion Tc, Turbo'd, Owner! Still a big part of the Gateway J-body group!
SOLD!!!!!!!!!!!!
i stripped my roof down to bare metal, sprayed it flat black with a rattle can (carbon fiber has too loose of a weave to lay it on anything other than black or whatever you lay it on will show through) and then laid down some resin. i had a difficult time getting it to smooth out with the resin still tacky (the way you're suppose to lay it) so i waited for the resin to dry and then laid it out and put more resin on top of it. it's been done for a couple months and has sat out in the sun many days with no issues whatsoever. all i have left is a little more resin and some sanding but i'm waiting until the rest of my body work is done before i go back to the roof.
