Has anyone successfully had the glass in Toyo mirrors changed?
Friday, November 02, 2007 5:44 PM
Obviously, I am a little worried about being able to see out of the Toyota mirrors I will be getting soon. I have read plenty of people saying it just takes some getting used to. Well call me crazy but I'd rather have the proper glass in there to begin with and be able to see normally than have to worry about possibly getting into an accident because I can't see in my mirrors properly!

After searching through a ton of posts about these mirrors, I read about a couple people who had gotten quotes to get the glass changed at a glass shop. I was wondering if anyone has gotten the glass changed successfully and about how much it cost? Also, was it just a regular glass / mirror shop that did it? Thanks in advance.

Thought about talking to a body shop or custom shop about putting US glass into the panels?

Yeah, actually I had thought about talking to my body shop and the place I got the windows on the GT tinted since they replace windshields and all. Looks like I'll have to make some calls next week...

On a side note, do you know anything about wiring? Well... I don't... so I may need your help when I get these .

I dont know anything about wiring Toyo mirrors, no... but I'm sure theres a tutorial on JBO that shows what to do. -- and wiring itself is pretty easy.

I will help you when you get them. No Problem.

wouldnt they be the same size as us cav mirrors. if the glass is the same, just pick up replacement glass for a us cav and switch em.

Yeah, I already found the instructions on how to wire them. I am actually going to wire them to the stock power mirror switch and to the power door locks so when I lock the doors the mirrors will fold in . It doesn't sound too difficult, but if I run into any problems I'll definitely be contacting you .

Nope. The glass is not the same size as regular Cavalier mirrors. I found a glass and mirror specific place near me today so when I get the mirrors I will take them over there and I don't see why they shouldn't be able to fit new glass to 'em. They advertise that they do cut-to-fit glass among many other things so hopefully they can do it for a decent price *crosses fingers*.

Its not as bad as everyone makes it out to be... If you rely on your side view mirrors so much to keep you from getting into car accidents, you shouldn't be driving at all.

If anything, the problem w/ the mirrors is the driverside mirror is angled towards you a little more than the passenger side.. Basically causing you to adjust the driverside mirror all the way out, and the passenger side all the way in... It will still be the same way with US glass installed.

I would suggest bolting the mirrors up to your car w/o wiring them and going for a drive to see how "bad" it is...

Yeah, I had read a couple different posts from a few years ago about people that had checked on getting the glass replaced and they were all saying they had received very reasonable quotes.

They are definitely pretty sweet looking. I can't wait to get 'em .

For starters, I don't rely on my mirrors that much to keep me from getting into car accidents. I would just rather have the proper glass in there than have to mess around with trying to "learn how to drive with the Japanese glass".

I don't know how you have your mirrors set, but mine are most definitely not all the way in and all the way out. If your mirrors are then you must be one of those people that drives with their seat leaned all the way back or something .

I know, but he did also say "It will still be the same way with US glass installed."

I don't know about anyone else here, but my current mirrors are definitely not all the way in or out.

I have a piece of mirror waiting on me to cut it and swap it onto my toyo mirror. Guess it would be a good time for me to do it. The toyo mirrors really aren't that bad. Only thing that really bothers me about mine is the convex mirror on the driver's side so it looks like things are farther behind you than they actually are.

Im saying..

Its not the glass that makes you have the mirrors adjusted all the way in or out- Its the angle of the mirror housing itself....

They are designed for right hand drive obviously- so the driverside mirror is angled more towards the car.. Causing you to adjust the glass all the way out, so you can see behind you.. Follow?

The passenger side mirror is angled farther away from the car, so for that side- you have to adjust the glass all the way in to see properly.

I don't know if the US mirrors are angled at all- never really noticed.

I don't know how much you're gonna be paying to put US glass in there, but it's really not bad at all w/ the toyo glass in there.. Give it 2 weeks w/ the toyo mirrors and you won't even notice.

It is the glass that bothers most ppl. Yes you do have to adjust them all the way in or out due to the angle of the mirrors, but it is the convex mirror on the drivers side that throws you off. Convex mirrors distort what you see so that you can see more.
Wikipedia wrote:The passenger-side mirror on a car is typically a convex mirror. In some countries, these are labeled with the safety warning "Objects in mirror are closer than they appear", to warn the driver of the convex mirror's distorting effects on distance perception.

Your eyes do adjust and you do get used to having this on the drivers side just as most people's eyes are already adjusted to convex mirrors on the passenger side.
