paint guns..
Monday, November 12, 2007 7:51 AM
Would these paint guns be idle for painting say a front bumper?

GUN A - 1.4 mm needle and nozzle set for lighter materials
GUN B - 1.7 mm needle and nozzle set for heavier materials.
GUN C - 0.8 mm needle and nozzle set for heavier materials.

LOCKING REGULATOR - Pressure regulator with gauge locks at desired setting in P.S.I. or KG/CM2.

If not what needle size's should I be looking for. Is there a difference in needle size for base coatings then color coat and finally the clear coat?

Any helpful info on guns to paint the exterior of a car would be great. I'd like to know what needle sizes are ideal for base coat, color coat, and then clear coat.

Thanks in advance. I plan on doing some exterior work and thought that painting the exterior myself would be cheaper.

I searched and found:

Quote:

You guys asked so here it is
sanding This is where you take down the high spots and give your primer a surface to adhere. Basically if you have alot of material to take down, you can use 60-80 grit to start, then as you get closer to you desired surface sep up to 120 grit, 320 or 400. Primer can be put on a little heavy to fill in pinholes. Dont worry about runs in the primer they can be sanded out.
When to use primer or sealer If you have filler, factory primer and/or bare metal to cover use primer. If you are covering old paint use primer/sealer ( the definition is stated in my above post) Basically after the primer is all sprayed SEAL IT.

Spray gun 101 There are many types/brands of spray guns. You will want to use an HVLP (high volume low pressure). Some call this a top load gun. You are going to need at least 2 different guns when doing a paint (depending on how complex it is).
You will need 1 gun set up for primer ( cause it is usually thicker than paint). One gun for you base/clear. The difference between the guns is the tip or nozzle size. For primer you will want to have between a 1.5mm and 1.8mm tip depending on the thickness of the material. Your base/clear gun should be around 1.2mm to 1.4mm.
Another way to do this is to just get a spec sheet when you buy your primer/paint and whatnot. When purchasing a gun (you get what you pay for) dont just go to Lowes and buy one. Well for a primer gun you could get away with it. Autobody supply stores sell guns. Here are some good names when shopping, Binks, Sata, Devilbiss, 3M, accuspray. I have a Star astro which has a 1.3mm tip, I only payed 129.00 for it, it sprays very nice. I am going to get a Sata Jet 2000 with a 1.4mm tip soon. It is a bit pricey 498.00. I have an old Binks 1.8mm tip for primer. Also you will need to get an adjustable regulator that mounts between the airline and the gun. Some of the better guns come with them. Cleaning instructions are in the box.

-surface prep after all of the sanding and before primer wipe the area to be primed with wax and grease remover.

Paint brands Here is a list of good paint brands with their off brands.
PPG (Omni is the off brand)
Dupont( Nasson is the off brand)
House of Kolor ( the way to go for cutom paint)
there are more I cant think of right now.

Types of paint Most factory auto finishes are urethane based paints, so this is what you will mainly want to use if you are redoing the factory finish. This is a base coat , clear coat system. Which means that after surface prep, priming, sealing, you lay down the basecoat. Do about 2 or 3 coats. If there are any runs you have to wet sand them out. When the finish is acheived you can clear it.

But should I use a different gun for base and clear coat? I understand to use the 1.5 to 1.8 for primer; but when put base coat and clear coat on the car should I use the same gun just clean it or a different gun.

Also, would it be best to use say a 1.4 for the base coat and then go smaller for the clear say a 1.2 or should I use the same nozzle size for the base and clear?

How hard is it to paint? To me it just takes a lot of patients and then everything should turn out nice..

Also, what else is needed to use a spray gun? I found a nice kit on ebay for 140 dollars. It's a DeVILBISS. If I purchased that kit which contains:

Kit Contains:

· 1 Full Size STARTINGLINE HVLP Gravity Feed Paint Spray Gun with a 1.3mm (Finish Coat) Fluid Tip and a 600cc (20 oz.) Metal Cup. This 1.3mm set-up is ideal for the Atomization of Basecoats, Clear Coats, and other Light Viscosity Coatings. Spray Gun Specifications: 30 PSI inlet pressure delivers 10 PSI air cap pressure at 13 CFM air volume.

· 1 Full Size STARTINGLINE HVLP Gravity Feed Paint Spray Gun with a 1.8mm (Priming) Fluid Tip and a 600cc (20 oz.) Metal Cup. This 1.8mm set-up is ideal for the Atomization of Primers, Sealers, Thinned Latex/Oil Base, and other Medium to Heavy Viscosity Coatings. Spray Gun Specifications: 30 PSI inlet pressure delivers 10 PSI air cap pressure at 13 CFM air volume.

Also Includes:

· 1.5mm(Single Stage) fluid tip and needle
· 1 Gun Cleaning Brush Set
· 1 Gun Maintenance Wrench
· 1 Blow-Molded Storage and Carrying Case.

Would I have everything I needed to paint the car excluding the paint? There's no air compressor that is needed to operate the gun or what?

if you have specific questions on paint guns and compressors, pm either fallen angle or big daddy. both are automotive painters and should be able to help you

Does anyone have any info on what type of air compressor i'll need. What specs should I be looking at when I go to buy an air compressor?

I plan to buy this kit: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=43987&viewitem=&item=200173208354&_trksid=p3907.m29

Where should I buy my air compressor from? Thank you, any help would be appreciated.
