Removing Tint - Defroster

Hey guys,

I remember hearing before that removing tint from the rear window will cause the defroster to stop working. Is there any truth to that? Is is a guarantee or an unlikely possibility?

Thanks.

if you tint is to old (purple color) and bubbly... your screwed. only way to get it off when its in that stage is to razor blade it.

if its not that bad try steaming it. steam an edge and take your time, pull very slow while steaming ahead of you. then after the films gone use goo gone to remove the adhesive.

I made this thing on my Sunfire. It was a hell of job to remove that old film but it is possible. Get a corner of the film and slowly pull. It should come off braking by fractions exactly where the defroster stripes are.
When it is done you will have thin but strong coat of adhesive left on a glass. To remove it, you can use a soapy water and sponge (dish wash one), never use some metal items for this.
In the case you broke defroster line, there is some special glue which can be used to fix it. Haven't tried anyone by myself, but short search with google gives a result:

But I would rather suggest you to visit a specialist to remove the tint of your window so then he will be responsible about everything.

dont bother doing it yourself, have a shop do it. it will be pretty expensive if the tint is older then time itself though.

DO NOT scrape a razor blade over the defroster lines.

You might be better off geting a used peice of glass put in. You have got to factor in what your time is worth.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I was thinking about just replacing the glass, but figure I may as well try removing the tint before paying for the new glass. As far as getting it done professionally, I would not be opposed to that if they guaranteed the defrosters to work afterwards. But I highly doubt any place would guarantee that. Certainly not for less than the cost of simply putting in new glass anyway.

As far as doing it myself, the tint is about 4 1/2 years old and is professional tint, not Canadian Tire brand. The back window was done professionally by my ex-brother-in-law with my help.

I have a heat gun and think I will give it a shot. The most I have to lose is a few hours.
