HID High Beam Only, Pros/Cons

Hey guys,

I'm kinda new to this web site although I've been lurking for quite some time when I bought my first Z24 (a 1998) in 2000. I've since sold that car and I really missed having it as a daily driver, so I just bought a clean '99 Z24. Anyway onto my question.. I tried a search but couldn't find what the exact answers I looking for.

I want to run a 6000k HID conversion kit on my high beams only, they can be found cheap enough on ebay. I want a clean and bright white with as much flood as possible. Most of my driving is at night over a mountain pass and I want to improve visibility.

1. Is a proper projector nessessary since it is high beam only without other vehicles or traffic?? I know these projectors focus the light correctly, but I really want a flood of light.

2. Being high beam only, will this cause me problems with the DRL's??

3. Are there other or perhaps better options for lighting up the road at night (other than mounting some 6" offroad lights)? I'm already looking at doing the fog light mod so they stay on during high beam.

4. Another option, one mod I've never seen done which I think could be a benifit, is somehow wiring the low beam to be on simutaniously while the high beam is on, has anyone ever done this? Instructions?

Thanks for your replies!

If you want a serious "Flood" of light. 4300k has the most lumens. Anything higher than 4300k the lumens start to drop and you'll get less visible light. The only benefit from having 6000K is the bluish tint you'll start to get as you go up in k's.

First off you got to remember flicking on and off HID's is not a good thing... If you would get a nice set of the clear headlights and a set of hid's you will only need your low beams... Also remember HID's have a warm up time so it will not be there right away unless you used them soon. Also I might add that I have 6000K HID's in my 95, and my 01's HID's are 8000K with a clear lence that is on the 00+ the light output is more then x2 of that of the 95's

'00 up lenses are clear compared to '99 down, really?? I hadn't noticed. Are they a direct bolt in? I'll have to look around an auto wrecker and see what I can find.

As for flicking the HID's on and off.. it takes me about 50 minutes each way to and from work, and a good 30 minutes of that time, each way, I'd pretty much have the high beams on at all times.

yeah but its not good for an HID bulb to be turned on and off frequently.... they have a warm up time as said

fair enough, I'll have to look for other alternatives. I live in a small @!#$ty town and no one can get away easily with HID's unless they're stock.

They wont melt. HIDs run at 35 watts compared to 55/65 watts halogen.

yeah i was gonna say that also.... the biggest misconception with hids, is that they will melt the housings..... they burn a lot cooler than normal halogen bulbs

Sorry no direct bolt in... The front bumper on the 95-99 Z has a little lip that rises up that would need to be trimmed to fir the 2K-2K2 lights. Also the 2K-2K2 are a single bulb system. They run a single 9007 bulb as opposed to a separate 9005 & 9006 for the two beams...

To swap over, at the very least, you need to re-wire the headlights, get the 9007 sockets & wires, and trim the front bumper or get a 2K-2K2 front bumper.

Knowledge about everything and yet an expert of nothing!!
Jack of all trades.
