im just wondering if you can put the 3rd gen convertible trunk hinges and shocks etc. onto a coupe car for use with a carbon fiber trunk?
just an idea ive been working on... havent really gotten the opportunity to see them up close though.
Yes i belive it will work with a little fiddling. A guy on bcj was playing with it and the biggest thing that had to be done was weldng supports on the back dash
I have a set if you want them
I went to junkyard while back and tried a set and they could work but not on the factory bolt holes of where the tensioner rods bolt to. maybe if u redid the holes 2" further back it would work but the hinge would hit my trunk jam on mine.
hmmm... can somebody snap a few pics of there's on the car? maybe then we could get a better idea of how it would work etc...
and john, if i can figure out a way to get them to work, ill let you know about buyn them. thanks.
whats the purpose of using vert hinges?
I looked into doing this awhile back...... got as far as pulling the hinges out of a wrecked vert.
Purpose of using them....... you cant use the stock support rods on the non-verts with the carbon fiber trunk lids, and get them to shut completely.

yep, brian is 100% right and if it wasnt for him i would have never realized this
i honestly dont know what im going to do yet, id like to keep the CF trunk for the weight savings but hate the way you cant have your cake and eat it to with these things.
i should be out in the garage tomorrow, i will get you some shots of the setup and how it is attached
WOW!!! thanks stephen, that post helped a bunch. although im still unsure of what im going to do.
it really sucks, im stuck between the pro/cons etc of having either the steelie or the carbon fiber
steelie pro's-
fits perfect and lines up better
more sturdy and will hold up better to bass from a large stereo
toyo cav trunk liner goes right on without modification
will stay aligned properly with the tension bars on and stay up w/o prop
cons-
heavier
stock
cf pro's
wow factor
lighter
con's-opposite from above
i want to paint the CF trunk to the effect of having the rk sport cf bezel accross the back but the rest white like the car, it's either that or use a steelie and get the rk bezel.
decisions decisions.
So what you're saying is that if I was to buy a rear c/f trunk, it can't be hooked up to the bars that keep the trunk up?
I did not know this if that is the case.
Hmmmm.
I guess a trunk prop is ok but not what I was exactly looking for with the c/f trunk.
Listening in.

Thank you Dave and JBO!
nonono, you can still use the bars if you like, just dont expect the lid to sit nice n flush with the body (up by the rear glass). hell, you could get lucky and get a better molded one or something, and i also have never had experience with a VIS lid either, so it might be an only JSP deal. i know that when i compared my VIS hood to another fellow j owners JSP hood, mine looked to fit a whole hell of a lot better. so maybe the same goes for the trunks.
mine always had a tendency to rise even higher while in direct sunlight in the summer months, i even went so far as to heat up one of the bars and twist it so it would have even less resistance, but it still didnt fix the issue. it did however let the lid lift up nice n slow/easy insted of shooting up like a rocket when released though.
i honestly think the bars put too much pressure on it and make it bow up. maybe if i did the same thing to the other bar as i did to the one it may even itself out. who knows....
So apparently the c/f trunk is so light that the pressure the rods put upon the trunk can cause it to warp out?
Hmmmm, that does kind of make sense.
If that were the case, I'd just use a trunk prop like I do for the front hood, and be done with it.
I'd figure also that the weight or lack of weight of the trunk lid would make it pretty easy to prop up and hold with no issues.
That's something to think about when I do get the trunk lid.
Thanks for the information.

Thank you Dave and JBO!
when i installed my fiberglass trunk i just unhooked the tension bars. worked great. also, class glass sends a new trunk weather liner with their trunks....its got a smaller "bubble" so that the trunk sits at the regular height (since its lighter it doesnt sit as heavy as a stocker)
not sure if thats what youre saying is your problem, but it might help to call them and see if you can get just the weather stripping if you get a c/f trunk
also if you decide to paint it, i would suggest doing it in a pearl white....that way it matches your car from far away, but up close you can see the weave.
coming back in 2008...
if i were to paint it i would paint it to look stock but with the rk sport carbon fiber bezel accross the center. but insted of having a stick on piece, it would look like it and be the real thing just painted to that effect.
SO has anyone actually done this yet?
