Leaky window (air only)
Tuesday, April 01, 2008 10:09 AM
Hi all, my driver's side window is noisy like the seal isn't right. Is this easily fixed? It's a 2000 z24 with power windows. Thanks for any help. (Oh, the noise seems to come from high up in the top corner towards the rear if anyone needs to know...)

Thanks!

most likely your b-pillar.... they have a rather high tendency to break... It is held on by 3 screws... and typically the area around the top screw brakes... it gives it the sound of having a window not sealed properly... replace the b-pillar and the sound should go away

I have the same problem with my 2001 Z24 cavalier, also had the problem with my 1995 Z24 cavalier.

Awesome, thanks for the help! Now if you could just tell me what a b-pillar is and if I should go with new or used... =P

the b-pillars are the shiny black peices that sit beside the window on the door.... they are easy to remove.. .simply roll down your window... pry back the weather stripping (it should come off prett easily without damaging anything) then there are 3 screws .. remove the three screws and they come off.... as for new or used... if you can find a good set of used with little fading then i would go used... I think gm charges $30 each... they are also referred to as door applique

I had the same problem with mine, and it was the weather stripping. Too bad the dealership charges 40+ dollars for a whole new piece, just for one door too. No water would leak in, just air when I am going at high speeds (50+mph).

Before you run out and tear apart your B-Pillar, where is the air coming from? Somewhere around the curve or where your window becomes a 90 degree angle?

Oh no worries, I'm at work right now (and on the 'net, I earn my money!) and won't be trying this for a few days. I'm not exactly sure where the sound is coming from, just that its from the corner. I'll check on the drive home tonight. Why?

How does the weather stripping look? Is it beat to hell or does it look brand new. I'd probably check the B-Pillar first, the weather stripping is a bit more expensive. One VERY accurate way to find out, is get your hand wet and feel around for air while you are driving.

Alright so I'm a little confused. If it's the B-pillar, does that mean noise but no air movement (according to the very scientific 'wet-hand" test ) and if its the weather stripping, does that mean air and noise? As I said I'm at work at this very moment but when I drive home tonight around 8pm (est) then I'll do my best to figure out the specifics. I know the b-pillars look a little crappy, so its good to know they are replaceable. Will update you all a little later tonight... and thanks again!

my passenger side b-pillar is shot.... its just noise.... from what I can tell... to be safe you could replace both considering you have to pull back the stripping anyways..

Was there not also a problem with the B pillars only having one of the three screws needed to hold it in place causing it to sound like a wind tunnel?

I'm sure i read that somewhere on here, but anyway it's another idea for you

that is actually what I've been mentioning.... its not that there are screws missing.... the three bolts/screws that hold the b-pillars in are not sufficient enough... usually the top 1 or top 2 holes break... a guy that I know who rebuilds cavs/sunfires after accidents usually drills 1 - 2 additional holes to prevent the b-pillar from breaking

OK, my power was out when I got home last night of curse so I couldn't post... but, anyway. I don't feel any air from the window. Seeing as I had no fluids available, I gave my hand a nice big lick and held it near the corner, trying not to get slobber all over the glass. Success! Also, someone asked if it was at the 90 angle or curve, it's at the 90 angle. So... B-pillar? Like I said it looks like crap so I'll probably replace it anyway.

it's most likely your b-pillar.... it's a pretty easy swap... i'm pretty sure if you do a search someone posted pictures before of the swap... just be careful if you drop any of the three bolt/screws they'll fall into your door panel... which means you would have to remove the door panel to get them

Alright, I'll be careful because the door panels SUCK to take off, I remember... but I'll be doing it anyway sometime soon so maybe this weekend I'll do it all... that is, if I can. One more question- do you know if the b-pillars are compatible from an 02 4dr to my 00 coupe? I'm selling the sedan and could care less if the future buyer has a noise issue, to be honest. :p I forgot to take a look before work tonight. McManus, you're the McMan! Haha, thanks for the help.
