question...
Saturday, April 19, 2008 1:26 PM
I really know nothing about body work or anything like that. But my car, has some pretty minor scratches and blemishes near the door handles on both doors, and on the trunk, and a few on the quarter panels. How do I go about removing these? Buffer? Wax? Etc? I am really clueless. My car is black, so it shows every @!#$ small flaw in the paint..lol.

Id like to get those scratches out, and make the car shine like a madman! Could someone recommend me some products or things I could use to achieve this? Thanks

I've heard good things about Mother's Clay bar. It is supposed to condition you paint and even out the surface, should help fill in the scratches.

watch using a buffer on black and dark colors because if you do it wrong then you'll have swirl mark down the side of your car.

an actual scratch in the paint cannot be taken out with the claybar, been there tried that. claybar is for swirls, very top surface scratches and overspray. if you dont know what your doing dont mess with paint because it sucks to screw up. take it somewhere and get them to take them out, better yet, take it somewhere and have it wetsanded and buffed!itll be like glass!!

if the scratch is deep enough to catch your fingernail it needs to be repainted.

Claybar doesn't help scratches at all, it just cleans the paint fully from things like brake dust (metal flakes) and other stuff that will not come off with just a wash. Leaves it realls smooth feeling. I usually wash, claybar, buff/polish, then wax. Sounds like your car needs a polish, if its just some isolated scratches and stuff (which it sounds like it is) you could probably buff them out by hand without too much effort and wouldnt have to go all out and buy a polisher etc. I use all Mothers brand stuff.
