best way to remove paint from a bumper so it can be prepped for paint ? The paint is chipping and I've tried chipping it off but to a certain point it becomes impossible where there's no 'lift spot' to chip off, so is there a chemical I can use to loosen it up and get the rest off ?

You know, I've always thought of using "simple green" to get some shmag off of my car, but I feared that it might screw with my paint. Seeing as how you're
trying to get the paint off, if you have some lying around maybe give that a try?

Haven't got any layin around most i have is paint thinner and a ton of different house hold soaps lol But I don't wanna put paint thinner on the bumper if its somehow gonna stay on and mess up the painting process later on lol Also its thicker paint that I'm chipping off so I can't see it workin either lol
Yeah, I don't even know if simple green would work, don't waste your money
I might test it on a small part of my car that's already chipping or whatever, just to see if it gets rid of any paint, because if it doesn't I'm going to start using it, lol.

simple green wont do anything
you could sand it down...? you'll have to anyway to prep it properly for paint. but im sure there are solvents out there, but i cant give you any names...
Aircraft remover
Its paint thinner and it works wonder. You'll still have to sand it down after to prep it though just like anything other paint job. But this will take off large amounts of paint down to bare metal. (I doubt its safe for plastics but I know its safe for metal)

....who ever painted that should be shot... That's what will happen if you don't prep something correctly. But with that I'd just say scrape most of the loose paint off then sand down the rest of it.

use a scraper
by looks of the bumper it'll come off rather easily
Get your self a 2 inch putty knife form your local hardware store and go to town. I used to do this all the time painting aircraft.. DO NOT USE paint remover. It will 99.99% chance eat through the plastic and screw up your whole project. There are paint rmovers meant for plastic, but they are pricey and hard to find. A 2 inch putty knife my friend is your best bet.

Yea I tried that one you lose the edge where the paints chipping its next to impossible lol
I'll try that putty knife idea. Yea I haven't done the chemical try yet as I was afraid of that, thought I'd best ask first haha.
sand it down. get a DA and have fun. the bumper is sturdy enough to withstand it, just be careful you dont let it burn or eat down too much to have a dip in it. if you dont want to use a DA, just hand sand it.
dual action sander. goes up and down and side to side, usually in an orbital motion
I have a palm sander. haha thats bout it.
I work at a body shop. . .
If that came in We would strip it down to the bare plastic. A da with 180/240 grit paper on it to strip it then go from there. I dont think There is any toher options really. you can try air craft paint stripper but there is a change it will swell the urethane ( does with some but not all) so you could test it on the back side and see what happens. There is no fast way to fix a bumper like that. Last one we have come into the shop that looked like that I think I have 9 hours in stripping it.
It looks like they didn't use an adhesion promoter or prep it right seeing as it was bare plastic. Which doesn't surprise me 9/10 shops dont prep bare plastic correctly.
Hope it works out in the best for you.

Yea that scares me now hahaha, I'll keep chippin away and give the sander trick a whirl (haha). I fully intended to strip it down to the Urethane just wanted to know the best way when I run into a roadblock thats all
what i did with my WW front lip is i used my ryobi orbit sander with 80 grit and took like 5 layers of paint off down to the bare urethane. then i switched over to 180 grit to get it nicely preped for primer and paint. i didnt have to use any chemicals for it, the paint came off with ease. peace.
"still want to smash that like the fist of an angry god"
alrighty, I'll take out the sander
lol
Thanks guys, I'll post up how it goes.
yeah i'd sand it off... chipping it off COULD chip/damage/scrape/scratch the bumper.

That was my fear and why I asked if there was any other way, cuz I didn't wanna DIG at the parts that won't chip off
Whats the verdict you had the weekend now whats the time damage so far?
How did it sand?
ShowFire
Yea but I never got a chance to
Was one hell of a busy weekend for me, barely even had time to sleep! lol
