Paint questions
Monday, September 22, 2008 11:35 AM
so im looking to paint my car. Im going to do it in my garage, just had a few questions on paint.

Is there a good place online to buy paint?
any brands i should stay away from?
should i sand most of the paint off, smooth, shoot primer, then paint/ clear?

I found this http://www.paintforcars.com/kits_starfire_blkmet.html I dont know if its any good.

also was looking at this gun. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/DeVILBISS-FINISHLINE-3-HVLP-Auto-Paint-Spray-Gun-PROMO_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trkparmsZ72Q3a1208Q7c39Q3a1Q7c66Q3a2Q7c65Q3a12Q7c240Q3a1318QQ_trksidZp3286Q2ec0 Q2em14QQhashZitem220282891884QQitemZ220282891884

this car btw, the roof is starting to fade. but i want to spray the whole thing.

Well I would not start by painting your car if this is a learning expirience.....

Pick up a couple gallons of cheap primer, and a junk yard fender from something that has some curves and edges. Then get some cheap paint. Spray some primer until you can lay it smooth, and even, then try a color coat, sand them down and start again until you get decent at it, then you can pick up som cheap clear, and spray that.....etc. until you can lay some decent paint......then try your car, only dont use cheap stuff for that....lol.

Also, I like to talk shop with the counter guys at the local body shop supply store, they can tell you about some of the products they have, and why they will be good for what you are doing. They can also give you the ins and outs of surface prep, and what chemicals to use for it when you go to do it.

You can read all the books you want, but until you get out there and start spraying.....you arent going to learn enough. You need to get a feel for your gun, how it sprays, and how to adjust it to get it to spray nice......AND how to clean it....

But yeah, some junk yard parts, and cheap materials is the best way to learn how to do it.

Was the compressor used for painting before? You have to set it up so that water doesn't build up and spray through the air line. If you have a Dupont store around, you can get Nason paint for fairly cheap.

you can also pick up el-cheapo paint on e-bay, and the duplicolor stuff at parts stores is $20 a quart, and would be good for learning how to spray.

no dupont store hear. we move into the house the 9th so ill update a little after that.

You know, john's right. Try that cheap stuff to get the overall feel. Then after you think you've got the basics, move up and get Nason because the prep, mixture, and set up will be more like the quality stuff. Nason isn't horrible (it's made by DuPont) but won't last quite as long.

painting is something that cant be taught onl line or by watching a dvd, should be taught hands on, what if something goes wrong, fish eyes, wrinkling, lifting, solvent pop, runs, each product has certain flash time , mixing ratios, each gun is different, i paint with sata, if ipainted with a sharpe i have to readjust the gun readjust my spray technique according to what iam holding, is a dvd goin to teach you that??? hell no!!!!

someone should be right next to you teaching you i can not teach you online, i can tell you mixing ratios thats about it, its not as easy as it seems is it??

napa is cheap....

Please look into at least a couple classes or go to a body shop and talk to the painter see if they would be willing to show you the basics for some extra cash. Painting is not just picking up a spray gun pointing and shooting. There is sooooooo much you have to do before you even get close to that point.

I think there is only 1 way to learn so im just going to give it a shot. Im not painting my car first (dont want to mess it up) im going to try to paint my truck that i got for free. my dad also has a 87 towncar that i could practice on. Someone had it before him and painted it with house paint so we sanded all of it off. Maybe ill get a couple panels from the scrap yard to try on. But my first attempt is not going to be on my car.

Turns out my buddys uncle has a garage full of paint. he is bringing me a few quarts of different colors. he also did body/paint work with him and is willing to show me some technique.

Don't sand off all the paint, paint is the perfect primer, you definetly need to sand it and rough it up but the primer/paint will stick better to paint then bare metal

Re: Paint questions

incorrect, primer sticks to metal, bare metal, fiberglass, smc, plastic, feathered paint, sanded paint, its the prep work underneath the primer that makes it stick, its the material that makes its self stick
prep work is huge to make anything stick, incorrect preped panles means primer wont stick, nor will sealr base or clear,
especially ppgs ncp 271 primer, awesome stuff
