This isnt about my J-Body, but my truck's hood has begun peeling pretty badly. What can I do about this? It was caused by the weather and all the stupid chemicals in the air. Thanks!
QFT. thats about the only option, its basically clear coat failure. sand it down and reclear it. paint shouldnt be to bad after a good wetsand and new clear.
^^^he QFT without Qing....lol
yeah, re-clear, be sure to wash and wax regularly when done.
most likely have to be repainted all together.. not just recleared.. the clear has peeled off and now the base coat has been weathered and abused.. if you just reclear it there is a chance that you would still easily be able to see where the peeling was because the basecoat would look different where the clear has peeled off and where there is some slight clear still on the rest of the black.
big daddy or heather can tell you for sure if i'm wrong though..

big daddy or heather... what about me? LOL
You're pretty much right, someone who could see the car in person and knows what they're doing (i.e. a professional) should look at and assess the damage.

I'll let it slide....... just this once....... :p (just playin)
the UV rays in the sun will penetrate the clear with time, all the good (expensive) clears have UV blocker in them now.
your will notice the roof & hood get more hot noon day sun, they always go first.
basically it's a clear coat malfunction.
I would advise a repaint, not just reclear.
also if you want it to last more than 5 years use a good clear.
Normal dodge paint delamination. Time for a repaint.
97 Cavalier 2.2 5-speed, 88 Camaro IROC-Z 5.7 auto, 91 Firebird Formula 5.7 auto, 88 Conquest TSi 2.6T 5 speed, 93 Silverado ECSB 5.7 auto.
he`s right, gm, dodge, ford, all in the early to late 90`s companies decided to try water based base coat ontop of a urathene sealer/ecoat, boom!!! delamantion!!!
so what i do is i strip the panle completely down to the e-caot or back down to the metal, people that are saying oh just reclear it you need to go in the corner for posting bad info, so take it to a shop get an estiamte, i would do it for 500 bucks
can i haz bondo
It definitely needs sanded down to primer and re-done. You're going to have different shades of black where it peeled and where the clear still is.
