I'm looking to paint the handles on my 98 just to gloss black, I dont want everything body color, so gloss black it is end of story. what is the correct way to remove the handles? ive had these door panels off hundreds of times on these cars and just never paid attention for it. is it just c clips or something to remove or what exactly am i in store for when removing them.
btw I want to remove them becuase I would never paint something on the car like a lot of people do and risk overspray getting under or around the tape/newspaper etc, I want to be able to take my time with this like all my painting.
also I have seen 12 pages of posts on painting them, I know how to paint, just not how to remove them before I dig into it, and nothing in the haynes or chiltons ( I have both). No post has said how to remove them yet that I have noticed.
Drill out the rivets from the outside of the car(under the handle) and unhook the rods from inside. If I am not mistaken they should pull right out after that?
After paint, reinstall the same way, riveting them back in....
thanks, anyone else? or is this the only way to do it?
yeah, your going to need to drill out the rivets.
really no other way of removing them.
i like your style, most people just paint them on the car. im the same way, id never paint something on the car that is removable.
In the end, we're all just chalk lines on the concrete.. drawn only to be washed away.
Just leave them on and paint them... Its so much easier and it still looks good. Just make sure you mask the car good so the overspray doesnt get anywhere and there ya go. I left them on and mine still look really good.

lol they told you how to do it. they are riveted on. only way to take them off is to drill out the rivets
ok, thanks everyone. i will be taking them off this way to paint them on my next weekend.
what size rivets do I need, i want to have mine painted so i'm gonna pull them off a junker and paint those so my car isnt waiting 2 days for paint and install. i have never drilled rivets before,... thanks
So you are going to take a drill to your car because you're afraid of overspray?
haha I never removed em on either cavalier my 98 or 05 there both painted and still look great and no overspray i taped an dnewspapred off 80% of the car lol so i didnt have any overspray etc
I even painted my mirrors on the car becuase they're the ones with l.e.d.'s in them and I didnt feel like disconecting everything so I again taped off most of the car and did em on the car all looks good i can post pic if anyone wants, my mirrors still need to be cut and buffed but im waiting for the paint to cure more to do that i just painted the mirrors last week,
haha. I shoulda payed more attention to this. I didn't realize this was nearly 2 years old...
I was on my ipod at the time. I'm gonna use that as my excuse.
You can always do what I did. Say screw the rivets and just cut a rectangle in your door. But your going to need to put something there like amazing door handles or a patch to shave it
