long story short, my "fun" car has looked like crap for a long time. turbo setup is where i'd like it to stay and i can keep the car running! finally replaced both fenders, patching up holes in the trunk lid from the stock wing, and get a cheap paintjob to ditch all the scratches covering 60% of the body from sitting around.
this brings me to my actual question of prepping for paint after removing the sidemoldings.... i've never dared to mess with the moldings as the car is 7 years old, but now prior to paint i'd like to ditch em. the work to remove the adhesive is fine, i've read the faq's and such, no big deal there. but i've heard chemicals (such as goo gone) will cause a paintjob to go bad if not prepped right. is this something i should worry about, or let maaco take my $250 and do their thing?
Go to an auto paint store they have adhesive removal products. Give Maaco a wink and a smile, and drive elsewhere to get your car painted. Hot Rod Magazine did a car with a roller that would look better than Maaco. They kind of remind me of the quality work Earl Scheib did when I was a kid.
my friend just got his car painted at Earl Sheib, lmao.
didnt turn out bad at all. i mean, no way was it show room.
but it looks better than before! its all shiney and sparkely now!
a lil over spray but nothing major or in horrible spot! [just on door handle].
and they did no body work. [and he not best at it, lol]
so there r some waves in it, but that his fault. not theres.
after i get all my accident damage fixxed ima prolly go to them or maaco too!
caz they r cheap, and bein a kid right outta HS payin for college on my own, im flat broke!
lol. so just because maaco and earl sheib r cheap doesnt mean they cant do a good job.
ive seen some beautiful cars come out of maaco too! so believe whut ya want about places
like that. ive seen both good and bad, but mostly real nice cars coming out of places like that!
Mad tyte grammar yo!
If you pay enough maaco will do a decent job. I used maaco on a quick project truck and it wasn't too bad for cheap. Although if you really want to take pride in driving around I would save up and spend it wisely with a quality place.
The proper way of using the word seen. It is not I seen it that would be I saw it. He has seen the car is the right way to use the word. English class is Cool. By the way thats my sig
I knew this would be derailed by mentioning Maaco
I appreciate the concern, but the car will never be shown for aesthetic praise. I could fill balloons with cheapest paint i could find, have my ten-year-old brother throw them at the car, and it'd be considered an upgrade. It's currently three different colors with
dozens of scratches on every panel, maaco isnt capable of making it any worse. Everyone knows Maaco is a franchise operation, my local Maaco does a great job for the green.
That being said, i've found a solution. I'd delete the thread if that were an option.
Hey man... I actually just painted my ride... it turned out pretty good, splotchy on the doors though... didn't cross spray enough with my metallic paint but I removed my moldings as well. I first peeled of the molding using a flat object like a screw driver then once the moldings were off I took a razor blade and stripped off the double sided tape, then I took a wax and adhesive remover by 3m.. you can find it at advanced auto for like 7 bucks, near the bodyfiller and sandpaper. Using those methods got it off well, whatever was left I just used corse sandpaper like 80 or 120, since I was painting anyway... But that was my method.... some use gooe gone and a blower dryer... What whatever works.
"Hi my name Earl Schieb I'll paint any car any color for only 19.95
I used fishing line and my thumbs...only the car was a year old when i did it. oh yeah, had 4 blisters for a week or two. but it looked great.
yes we all know macco is horrible!!!
the double sided tape can be removed with an eraser wheel, go to the local body shop supplier and get on, there cheap and work great
can i haz bondo
