Hey guys... I just painted my car a week ago, under terrible conditions..... One of those conditions was poor lighting... I was wondering if my car needs more clear in some spots can I sand the whole part with 600-800 and just clear it or am I going to have to sand repaint and then clear all over again? Also I used a metallic and it came up splotchy on my doors and quarter panels, I was thinking it was because I didn't spray vertical enough after spraying horizontal, would that be the cause? Anyway thanks alot guys.... once I fix the doors and panels I'll post some pics.
you should be able to just reclear and not start over from scratch
not sure about the metallic. was it a flake? if so, was it in the clear or base?
if you messed up the flake in the paint, and it is splotchy, you will have to re-shoot the color coat as well.
poor lighting sux for sure.
the clear thing....why do you "need more clear"? is it dry looking? is it something that can be wet sanded and buffed?
I looked at the paint it looks more like it needs more clearcoat.... the car has been sitting for a week, so I guess I should sand the clear a bit. The metallic is in the basecoat it was a blue metallic paint.... it looks lighter that the other parts of the door and if you shine light on it the spots are lighter than the rest of the door. But if you look at it close and straight it looks even in color... So I wonder if it just need more clearcoating, if you run ur hand over it it's smooth but not extremely smooth like the other parts of the car that have plenty of clear. The parts that have plenty of clear looks even and great the parts that don't looks splotchy.
post up pics
and it kind of sounds like you just went thin on those parts
still sounds to me like it needs wetsanded....
and buffed....
I think I'm gonna re-add some clear over about half the car and then get it cut and buffed... The car has been sitting for a week now since its been painted, so should I sand it or a high grit first or will the clear just merge itself...? I'm guessin the sanding with like 800.... but thats me. Also I'm going to have to get a different brand of clear, I ran out of what I was using... so I guess I'm gonna run to napa and get about 2 quarts urethane clear and the activator I need. The clear I orginal used was 5 Star Extreme Klear Koat 4.2Voc... so hopefully the napa will work. Let me know what you guys think... this is my first paint job so I'm hope'n it will be decent overall.
Well as for the paint problem I painted mine too and at first got the same splotchy effect. It comes for spraying too close and too slow at times. The only way that can be fixed is to spray heavy over again. With the clear if you are good at blending, sanding, and buffing then you can pull it off if not I would either scuff it and respray it or just use lots of wax and buff away.
wow!!
if this fresh paint has been sitting for more then 24hours, your @!#$ it needs to be sanded down and base and clear re shot, now if you painted in good lighting, and you had lets say a small problem, the clear can sit untouched for 24 hours and can be reapplied with out sanding, but you have to be in the 24hour window
the dry the zebra stripes, is all from the spraying technique, air pressure, not being mixed wrong, and why are you going up and down when your spraying a side of the car??? your doing something wrong is your pattern to tight, spraying to close to the panel, incorrect air pressure, your going wet then dry wet then dry, hence tiger stripes, spots, fan pattern is to tight, open the fan pattern, on your gauge should be about 35psi
here`s a little tip to adjust your pattern and air pressure
take some masking paper, tape it up on the wall, turn your air cap the other way not the normal way, now turn your material all the way in mark the knob and turn it 2 1/2 turns out
spray the paper, when you spray the paper you will see a smile, and when you do the smile will have some material running down just in the middle, thats the correct spray pattern, but again this may work for some may not work for you, i need to be by your side teaching you not sitting in front of my puter telling you what to do
this is something that can not be taught online
