im about to get my car repainted the stock color with a little flake added in the clear, i jsut need to buy the paint.

how much paint should i get?

also for a wet look how much clear and flake should i put in it?

A gallon will easily cover it all.. I don't paint all-over jobs so i wouldn't know exactly and the color has a lot to do with how much you'll use as well..

as for the wet look.. its not how many coats its application... and then detailing.. Depending on someone paint manufacturer each spray technique will be different but when i spray my materials, I'm using(w/ Sata 3000 a 1.4 tip and needle at around 32psi for base, 38psi for clear(Sata 3000HVLP gun).. and when I spray I will be about 4" off the panel moving rather quick but I get very minimal over spray and the clear is nice and wet. if I were to pull my gun back to about 6" and keep my travel speed it would come out rough or "dry"

So as you can tell its spray technique not how much clear you have.. but, if you put 4-5 coats of clear on and its a little rough that will give you some room to wet sand and buff the whole car and get that same wet look afterward and still have your minimal 2coats for UV protection. btw for reference on most jobs, 2 coats is the normal amount, but I don't wet sand and buff the panel unless I have dirt in it so I'm not too concerned about having a small layer of clear.

Ask the person painting the car how much of what material you'll need.

I say this because different painters spray differently, and can use different amounts of material when they're painting. I was what you would consider to be a "heavier" painter, I used a little more materials than some, but not a rediculous amount more.

I would suggest for the flake to not add it into the clear coat, some painters do it that way, I always added it into a "mid coat", using a binder/balancer as a medium to carry the flake. Basically a binder/balancer is a clear mixture used in your color coat, but it's clear and works very well for adding flake/pearl. I'd assume the painter knows what they're doing (I'd hope) and that they wouldn't put the flake in the final clear.

So, we can sit here all day giving you suggestions on how much paint you'll need, but your best course of action is to ask the person who is spraying your car how much of what materials to buy.

correctamundo we do not add flake or mettalic to clear, we use a mid -coat clear mixed with pearl or what have you , she right it depends on the painter it really does, but if your asking i guess your not experienced are you
on completes i do 4 coats, after it is done whats left is 2 coats your right dude, it does not depend on the material being use, spies is in comparission to ppg dbu system, i suggest using ppg dbc system, its thicker, mettalics lay down flatter

and mixed with dx57 is chip resistant, and recomended to be used when doing graphics, we do not sand sealer, if base is sanded with 1,000 or 1200 base is reapplied, clear is sanded the next day or 2

yeah, all depends on the painter, and thier equipment.

I used house of kolors intercoat carrier, and it turned out great.

on my car, I dont think I would have gotten the same results by putting it in the clear.

fallen is right a couple coats of base depending on the color then a clear base with flake in it then a few light coats of clear over top or you'll get orange peel and it will feel rough.

ummmmm, you do not want to apply clear lightly you want a medium to wet coats, appling it dry will result in nothing but orange peel, the clear is not made to handle the pearl or a mettalic added into it, i forget the bad things it doe sif added
we use a mid coat clear for any type of pearl of candy or mettalic

Do not put flake in clear, and do not put more clear on for a "wetter" look..

In fact if your painter is saying he is going to do these things, find a new painter...

Flake or pear should be used in a mid coat clear, it has special binders in it to help suspend the pearl or flake, and will lay down more evenly than in a regular clear. (thats not even getting in to adhesive qualities between the two)

Also, you want a clear coat over the flake coat so that it can be wet sanded and buffed to give the "wet look" if you do not do a clear only top coat, you will be sanding out the flake, which could give you an uneven appearance.

And to much thickness to your paint job as a while will make it easier to chip, only enough material should be applied for even coverage.

I did maybe a gallon of primer on his car, 1/2 gallon of black base, quart and a half of intercoat clear with 1 oz pearl, then 2 quarts clear. We bought a little more than we should have, but I have a few things to touch up when the gun magically decided to do its own thing and leak out of the top vent, and spritz some clear on the fender. We didn't touch engine bay or inside of the doors, they're already black and pretty darn close to the color.

I know some guys use some clear, mix in their pearl/candy, then mix up more clear for the top coat, but I like the intercoat clear. Seems to be a better carrier for the pearl/candy than regular clear is, and less separation of the pearl/candy from the clear.
