I have a 2003 cavalier 2 dr, not that that matters in this case.
My car has a spoiler on the back which is an aluminum spoiler, on the car when i bought it, but i want to shave it off. does it HAVE to be welded or can i fiberglass with mat from the backside and then use body filler on the top part of the trunk? If that is possible how long should that last once i get it primered and painted?
I am pretty knowledgeable when it comes to fiberglass so i should be able to knock it out in a day or 2, but my question is whether or not its the right approach.

Get your trunk welded, or get a new trunklid with no holes. Fiberglass and metal expand and contract at different rates, it won't last long at all.
correct, fiberglassing a hole shut=rust and it will sink or bubble in a few months
fiberglass is not as good as people think it is, for interior custom work ya its great, but its more porus then bondo, it is not corrosion resistant, and it is not water proof
now the new products from evercoat, has kevlar in it, it is water proof, corrossion resistant, and it eliminates the seams that die back down, awesome stuff, even there new bondo is corrosion resistant and water proof

i say also just grab a used trunk lid from your local "pick a part"

you could glass it, but it will pop out so its almost pointless to do. like others said, get it welded shut or better yet find a cheap lid in a yard near you.
you could notn just glass a hole shut, it will bubble right up in a few months, i dont understand when some one with yrs of experience posts correct info, someone has to come along and post the wrong info
has anyone welded on a deck lid?? the metal is so stretched to make a deck lid and now you putting more heat to it, i have been in the trade for close to 20yrs and i still get warping from time to time

My 99z had a stock Spoiler, I fiberglassed and bondo, the holes and it works just fine, also used glass and bondo to shave taillights and key hole, been that way for about 18 months now with no problems. pics are kinda far off sorry.

i saw something about 3m structural adhesive that is supposed to be stronger than a weld. What if i used that and then body filled in on top just like welding a piece of metal?
not trying to cheap out, i would just like to do it myself and i dont have the know how to weld.

WELD IT!!!!!!!! Or get someone else to... ANYTHING that you use other than metal won't work permanently, as any other material ONCE AGAIN expands and contracts at different rates. I said that in my first post.

ok i would like to respond to this i do agree that fiberglass on metal on cars is a bad idea but to say fiberglass is porous is not rite. i have worked in the fiberglass industry for over 22 years making anything from underground fuel tanks to water tanks and boats. the fiberglass that i use does not corrode and is water proof . i do want to say that fiberglass on cars will stay for a year or so if it is dun rite but it is still not a good idea but that is just my opinion
the fiberglass that you may use could be different then what we use on sheet metal, not the metal you use it on, big difference here pal, evercoat has a upgraded version of the popular "fiberglass" it has kevlar in it, it is water proff, and rust proof, and it elminates shirnkage, the dies back that we all see when someone shaves a door handle or puts a 1/4 on and you see the seam in the sail panle
the fiberglass used on boats is not what we use on sheet metal again totaly different animal, but hey he can do what he wants and when it bubbles back in a few months and then posts up here that it bubbled i can come back and say i told you so
