Another evil eyes topic....
Friday, November 07, 2008 7:19 PM
I really want to have evil eyes welded onto my stock hood but I'm just not sure of my options. My friend has a mig welder, but neither of us really have any body work experience so I'm reluctant to try it. What I'd love is if anyone could recommend someone, or a member from the Montreal Quebec area who would be willing to do the work, or help me do the work - obviously I would pay. I just don't want to end up paying something like $300 for eyelids...

If I have no choice and try to do it myself with my friend, what sort of metal should I use? How thick should it be?

I have searched, and I have a good idea how to do it (thanks to a bunch of tutorials), but I lack the actual experience.

get an extra stock hood and mess around with that. get two if you can so you can cut the new metal from the extra hood so itll have the same roundness at the sides as the stock hood does.

beyond that, check out your regional forum or the jco's site for people in your area who can help.

couldn't of said it better. An extra hood is almost a must whether its to actually do it on, practice, or cut the lids from. I am in the process of doing the same thing and I have 3 hoods...1 on my car now, 1 for the project, and 1 to cut into.

here's another option you can go, first sand down your headlighs w/ high grit sandpaper tape off the area you want not to be painted and paint stock color... (cheap, effective, cant really mess it up) then spray some clear ..... let me know what you think.. im doing this as soon as i get my s10 working and out the garage...

I'm not really looking to go the cheap way - I want it done right and looking aggressive. I eventually hope to get clear lenses and projectors to finish the whole effect - but that would be a little down the road. I'm in my last year at university and I'll have to pay off my loans before I commit too much to stuff...but ya my moto is do it once do it right.

I agree with cheap and hard to mess up, but effective...not so much. And on top of it, it's something people will laugh at (at least around here), trust me.

exactly my point - I believe it would look kind of foolish. I think I like the idea of getting a spare hood. I'm just not found of getting 2 spare hoods...that could be a little pricey. Junk yards around my area are all a$$holes.

I appreciate the input guys - but I do not have any intention on doing it the ghetto way - it just looks dorky.

if you dont have the skill to do it chances are its going to look bad. save some money and have a quality shop do it. if your worried about the cost of a spare hood u obviously dont have a ton of extra cash to do it. so just have it done and learn to weld with spare parts you pick up down the line.

I'm not too worried about picking up one hood thats no big deal - but then like you said I don't have the skills to do it, so I doubt it will turn out good. Also, if I buy a spare hood, that means once I'm done I'll end up with a spare hood, and if i buy 2 spare hoods I will end up with a spare hood and a piece of scrap...which will probabbly end up costing the same price as getting it done by a shop. So I'm thinking getting a shop to do it is the best way to go. Thanks a lot guys.

im willing to bet if you posted a thread in your regional forum, you can find someone to help you do it for maybe some lunch and beer.

if you were closer to me, I could have it done in a day.

I posted in my regional forum like 3-4 days ago. It seems to be a slow part of the boards, but I'll give it time. Man I wish I posted this a few weeks ago. Last week I was in toronto for a few days - Buffalo would have been a little drive around the corner. Thanks for the offer though.

So I went to a local body shop and he quoted me about $400 CDN to do this - does that seem reasonable? (Includes parts, supplies and labor for welding and painting)
