Going with LEDs in the tails... blinkers very fast
Friday, November 21, 2008 8:11 PM
OK heres the thing... i got a pair of 3157 LEDs for my tails. How do i get the blinkers to stop flashing so fast? I would rather not add load equalizers to the system, as they get very hot and i dont need that in my trunk. Can i slightly modify the system, or add a different flasher? Or am i stuck with these load equalizers in the trunk?

Also, i would like to add LEDs to the front corners too... will i experience the same problem?

Thanks to everyone in advance!

Yes you will most liely experience the same things if you change out your front corners to LEDS. Trying a different flasher unit is definitely an option, but equalizers might be the easiest.

flasher is by far the easiest. did it in my old cav when i rewired the tails. (not with leds but took out one bulb) flasher works perfectly.

Ive never done this. (I Know more bout go than show) obviously i will need a special flasher, where do i get this. I know the equalizers are easy, but so is a flasher and i would rather do that.. one more quick question... how does the special flasher work? If i did that, would i still have problems with the front corners when i do those? thanks again

If you do the load equalizers on the rear then switch to LED's in the front, you will have a repeat of the same issue you are having now.

I recommend the flasher from the get go if you are going LED front and rear...

Personally, I went with the equalizers since I got them for cheap a couple years ago and mounted them straight to the bumper core away from anything that would melt.

EP27 style.

If I understand the inner workings, instead of relying solely on the load, it has an internal timer circuit to open/close the relay for the blinkers when the turn is activated.

Can i lengthen the wires on the equalizers and mount them out of the way until i get the flasher? incaase theres different kinds, i got some that look like little rectangular sticks, bout 2 inches long, with a one inch wire coming form each end. I still want the LED flasher eventually. Also, will this harm my electrical system over time? It's simple. All these do is cross ground and power so there is enought load fot the flasher to think regular bulbs are being used. What if the blinker, hazards, or brake lights are on for a few minutes?

get an electronic flasher... they use them on semi-trucks and stuff that uses LED lights

Yes. No. That's it for the install. They get a little warm, so mounting them to plastic isn't the best idea, but otherwise, no harm....

If he already has the load equalizers, might as well use them until such time that he gets the flasher. It is a 100% reversible install, so it won't hurt anything for the time being.

Should be rated around 50w @ 6 ohms, and the description sounds right.

the EP27 style... a 5 pin relay. does this go under the hood? is this all i need to correct my problem?

The flasher is near the brake pedal and will eliminate the need for load resistors.

and this is the EP 27 relay? what if i were to switch back to reg. bulbs in the future (im not this is just a "what if")? would i have to switch back the relay too?

Its a flasher, not a relay... although the pin structure is similar try not to confuse the 2 here ....

You won't have to switch later, but you will need either the EP27 or equailizers when running LED bulbs.... your choice of which (but not both at the same time).

The EP27 is the designation given to this particular style of flasher based on the internal circuitry and OEM compatibility... think of it more like a model #. It an electronic 5-pin flasher that is able to utilize both LED and standard bulbs and will flash at the same rate regardless what combination of bulbs are used. The OEM 5 pin checks the load and if it is not enough (either bulb out or LED bulb), it causes that side to blink faster as a warning. This flasher stops that

I'm curious though, what are you using in your Sunfire in the rear? All of the 3157's I've tried have not worked too well (and I've purchased just about every style out there)

got them at autozone. lookin at the package right now, made by a company called JamStraight. work nicely in the Aftermarket tails, and the light shows up real good. also blink nicely when i run the equalizers but they burn holes in my trunk carpet, hence what led me to post this.I'm not sure if they show up nice cuz i got the euro tails or if theyre just a good bulb. i am satisfied with what i have done to this car so far, and hopefully will be from this LED swap to the motor swap. BTW thanks for all the help man i never would have figured this out otherwise.

ok today i went to CARQUEST, got the EP27 flasher for $10 (my cost ) and took the ghey load EQ's off. the LED's worked great so i went to autozone and got some amber 194 and 3157 LEDs for the clear corners in front look and work GREAT!!! thanks for yor help everyone, especially Kardain.

This is just me, but I'm not digging the "hot-spot" effect of the first pic instead of filling out the lens. Somehow I had a feeling that was the bulb style you were using when you mentioned Autozone. But as you said... they are daytime pics, so there may be a "night and day" difference (no pun intended)

They are adequate (but not the best) for direct on, which it appears your pic is attempting to depict, but if the bulb is at an angle, it is no good. There aren't enough radial firing LED's to be fully effective, as depicted below:

Your style bulb, stock housing (on the left), compared to an incandescent 3157, brakes on:

Your style bulb, as head on firing in the reverse lights (not the best pic... but I don't have the 95-02 rear anymore so I can't get another):

Personally, I would have gone with either of these 2:

http://www.v-leds.com/Shop/Control/Product/fp/vpid/5168711/vpcsid/0/SFV/32481

Example of side firing:

^^And that is actually how the lens looks at night too.

FYI, you have to go with a radial (side) firing LED bulb up front. The same style that you have in the rear does not in any way act as an effective bulb.

These will work just fine. I used them prior to swapping to the 03 front and no problems with day or night visibility: http://www.v-leds.com/Shop/Control/Product/fp/vpid/4481151/vpcsid/0/SFV/32481

im guessing its the same thing as my bike, I got LED flushmount turn signals on the front of my streetbike and a custom led rear light setup that did the same thing, they put a resistor on one of the wires for each light and it stopped. like i said not sure if its the same, but i would give it a shot since theyre cheap. goodluck.
