hid install help?
Wednesday, January 07, 2009 7:19 AM
I just bought the 9007-3 bi-xenon kit for my 03 cav and im having trouble installing.. this kit has no grommets so i have to drill the hole and do something.. also the kit has only one factory plug on it. it plugs into one side of my headlights i guess and leaves the other plug on the other side hanging there.. doesnt seem right? i got the kit from vvme.

sounds to me like you have a relay harness to go with that HID kit. You want to plug the left side headlight into it, hook up the power and ground, and done......I dont know what you are trying to drill though. Theres plenty of open holes to tun wiring under the hood.

on the headlight themselves.. im suppose to run the wires connected on the bulbs to outside the headlights to hook the harness to... if i drill the hole on the back of the little door that goes around the bulb, the kit didnt include a grommet to seal up the little door to the wire.. what shall i do? and it does have a relay. so do i just leave the right side headlight factory plug just hanging there not hooked to anything?

the bulb should be held in place by the factory bulb clip, and the wires will stick out the back. You do not need to drill into the headlight, they will be outside the headlight already.

And I would cover the RF factory connector with something, a cap of some type, but yes, it remains unplugged with the setup you have. The lights get all there infor from the LF headlight socket, and power from the battery.

right but on the headlight itself, in order to change the factory light bulb, you have to unscrew a door which is sealed on the headlight ot get to the bulb and its all sealed up... if i dont drill a hole throw the back of door which screws onto the headlight assembly to cover the bulb, the wires wont be able to be run outside... do i just leave the door off? if i do that, it will collect mosture inside the headlight...

ah, I see what you mean, I didnt realise you had an 03.

Without seeing it, I cant tell you exactly how to run it, as I dont remember off hand the factory connection, but I would snake the HID wires through where the factory wires to the bulb go. Again, this may/may not work, as I dont remember exactly how the factory wiring pulgs in.

I would try starting the car, and turning them on when running.

im suprised to hear this with a relay harness. of course I would check your connections for tightness and corrosion.

update. i got them to turn on but the ballast are making a humming noise and when i turn them on, my cluster says they are stuck on high beams. i unplug the ballast so that just the relay is connected to the car and its stuck on high beams... these are suppose to be bi-xenon... also when they are on, they arent bright at all...

usuallt balasts will make a hum whenever there is not enough juice to them. Some will make a very slight hum all the time, but if its audible from outside the car, my guess is they arent getting proper power.

I am going to say you dont have something wired right. and check that the bi-xenons have a good ground.

So what would make it stuck on high beams?

not grounding the bi-xenon part, or other wiring error.

Also, make sure you have it wired up the correct way, I am pretty sure the 03+ still use a grounded switch, instead of a + switch, so make sure you have the relay harness wired properly.

The relay came pre wired.... should I rewire it?

you should consult a wiring diagram and see if there needs to be any changes for a ground switched system, and maybe contact the manufacturer.

just installed mine had the same problem witht the humming read that the bilbs have to burn in. left them on for ten min and it went away. had to disable the drls to get them to work. sounds like a wiring error on the bi xenon for the high beam light in the dash

Well what I did was use the stock 9007 plug on the head light and it has three wires so I hooked the ballast neg and possitive to the 2 wires and then for the 2 small hi/lo beams I hooked the black wire with the ballast black wire and the red wire on its own wire.. the lights turned on and turned off so I unhooked the plug for the high/lo beams and they turned on so I cut the black wire and used its own connection so there are no more piggy backs and now they turn on well one isn't turning on so I think I need a better ground so I will try that tonight. But what could be wired wrong?

theres your problem, the bi-xenon (small black wire) that you hooked into the balast ground needs to be its own ground. Especially on a negative switched circuit.

That should eliminate the high beam light on the dash.

Thats if I am reading what you wrote correctly. Where are the small red bi-xenon wires run to?

The red and the black wires are run from the hi/lo part of bulb to the relay.. take a look at the harness pic I sent u last time to ur email... now every wire is seperate and back to normal and its stuck on hi beams

the red wires should be run to the relay.

The black wires should be grounded near each headlight.

I looked at the harness pics, and that should work.

Have you disabled the DRL?
Also, does anything at all happen when you hit the high beam switch?

Finally, as stated, I would check with the manufacturer on the wiring when working on a ground switch instead of a power switch.

Ok the big red and black wires from the bulbs go to ballasts the small black and red go to the harness and on the harness are 1 red wire and 2 black wires. And the original plug. That's the way they are hooked up right now with 2 grounds hooked to car and red hooked to battery and light plug hooked to left side. Only thing I could think of is the relay is messed up.... I don't know how to check that though.... this is from vvme remember

I think you need to call the place you bought them from. I still think it is a problem caused by the factory wiring sending confusing signals to the relay, more than a bad relay.

They SHOULD be able to tell you how to wire the system to avoid such headaches. Sounds like you have it hooked up correctly now though.
