Ok guys I'm not the first one to do this so all the credit really goes to Chazz. But heres the low down, I am installing his old RX-8 Headlights in my 99 Pontiac Sunfire... I have a few pictures but there are more to come.
Here's the car before:
Here's a shot of one of the headlights:
Here's a rough fitment:
Getting an idea of Hood fitment:
Rough install, this is after I have done a general cut for the lights, still needs trimming:
Another Rough install, this is with a little more trimming done still more required:
More pics to come soon guys!
I think that will look pretty nice if you finish it well.
Looks like you need to bring that hood down some, otherwise there will be a large gap at the top of the lights, but a nice start.
Wow! Very nic concept, I am a fan hope this turns out really good for you man, I havent been around this website for a LONG time but I ahve never seen this before
" Aint nothin' but a Peanut!"
looks roughly like sunfire lights with projectors lol
Ya the hood isn't closed in those pics its just partially latched... But it is still off slightly, about an inch just needs to be extended, good thing it's a fiberglass hood makes it easier. I got the high beams, low beams, and the inner white dome signal all done and working. Just need to trim the bumper more, get the other signal working and do some fiberglass work.
Also here Chazz's sunfire I stole his lights from:

damn, thats gonna look tits when done!
cant wait to see it finished!
just PLEASE tell me you arent going to do that funky megatron thing with your front bumper.....cause that totally ruined that black fire.
I'm thinking about doing fender flares but like how bummerz did on his orange/black sunfire gt.
The reason I didn't do a retro fit was because:
1) my headlights were broken and needed to be replaced, even the mounting brackets
2) Would have cost me the safe either way
3) Retro won't be street legal
So basically this was a street legal way of get projector lights =)
I'll post more pics tuesday or wednesday
looking great so far; i also liked the evil eyes you had...
98 j-body sedan
I would check with local laws before saying a headlight conversion is street legal.
I remember you saying something about needing a DOT number on the lens, but if that dot number doesnt match the manufacturer that its issued to......its just as illegal.
Especially if they do not aim right.
But if you got a deal on them, could very well be cheaper than a retro if you do all your own glass work.
I may be wrong, but it kinda looks like with the "pointy" sweep of the Sunfire nose as opposed to the more flat nose of the RX-8, those projectors might end up lighting other people's lanes. When aligned with Sunfire nose and evil cut out, the projectors look like they're facing the trees.
Otherwise, if that doesn't pose a problem (assuming you've already lit them up at the pemanent mounting angle).... I think they look HELLA CQQL!!! Nice idea, hope it works now that you cut up your bumper.
Good luck.
headlight conversions technically are illegal.
Jo3y... shhhhhh don't tell any one
The lights need slight adjustment, I have them hooked up for highs, lows and turnsignal just gotta get the running light up. Right now they need to aim up higher and the driver needs to aim more towards the center. Since they are projector headlights the low beams have a defined cut off so as long as I don't aim them to high it shouldn't blind anyone.
Also the headlights number is DOTH9D2S which only states the type of bulbs used... My wife's dad is a mechanic and a state inspector I told him about the headlights and he said they'll should be fine just as long as I aim them right. So all will be well.
what is the "megatron thing"?
almost looks like the 03-05 style sunfire lights.... almost same shape...i find
13.22 @ 105.2
Ya actually they are pretty close in shape... if you used the 03 bumper is would need to be trimmed with a sander for the inner corner and that's basically it. The 03 hood sits fine on it. I'm trying to use my 99 Predator hood... so far it works but it needs to be extended by an 1inch of the headlights and that with it having evil eyes on it. The lights sit on top of the metal support bumper. I had to trim the plastic bumper a lot. The wiring was a pain so many bulbs and on top if it none of the sockets I ordered worked so I had to modify all of them. Here's the bulb listing for the headlights:
High beam: H9
Low Beam: D2S HID
Turn Signal: 4337
Inner Turn Signal: I used a 194 but it calls for like a 2325 or something around there
I've got the signals running from the one stock outlet and I had to cut the wires for the highs and lows. My hid it was wired directly to the low beam wire and ground. I'll get some pics up this weekend. I'm getting the car inspected today, I still have fiberglass work to do but I'll do that once it's a little warmer out, it's lie 20-30 degrees here and I'm a wuss when its cold.
The bodywork on that flat black 'Fire is effin' tits!! I love the flow.. hate that megatron crap on the front tho..
As for the RX-8 conversion, it has the potential to flow and be clean enough that a cop would never guess its a conversion! Plus, being a stock part, you are FAR less likely to get moisture problems and such. Very cool man, if I had a 'Fire Id do that swap in a heartbeat!!
I got some new pics, I'll post them tomorrow. I got the car inspected the lights work great but the body still needs work, even though the body isn't finished the car passed inspection because the lights were aimed properly and all the signals worked.
Sweet man. Post them pics ASAP!!!
WTF is the megatron thing!
