removing side mouldings

Hey there; i want to remove my side mouldings on my 98 sunfire, problme is i was going to do this a few years back and i remember taking of the little side moulding piece on the fender and under this piece it looked as if there was a indent in the clear coat where the moulding piece sits; i am just wondering if this was just some glue on the clear coat but not indented or what, i did not pay attention to much to it, just assumed it was messed up underaneath, but now that i think back it may just have been glue or something; i know it was really hard and wax did not take it off.
I had the same sort of outline where my rear bezel was on my trunk lid; after removing the bezel there was a entire outline of the bezel, like old hard clear coat or something; but i scrubed at it with a mothers product(clay with the spray, cant remember the name) and after a few hours i removed it, i am thinking this could be the same @!#$ and i may be able to remove it and remove my moulding for a cleaner look; i guess my question is did any of you exspereince any problems removing your side mouldings?

When you remove any badges and/or moldings there will be an outline from them. The outline is dirt and residue from the adhesive that holds the badges and/or moldings on. WD 40 and some elbow grease should take it off no problem. Be sure to wash and wax afterwards.

The Mother's product is called a clay bar. The clay bar is also very useful when removing badges and/or moldings. I would use the WD 40 first, than wash, than use the clay bar and finally give it a good wax. It will look nice and clean and smooth when you're done. Definitely worth the trouble.

Thanks for the help j to envy.
I removed tons of decals and such in my time, goo gone worked good, but when i removed my rear bezel a few years back it was not just dirt and adhesive, it was a thick outline of what apperaed to be the clear coat, but with lots of scrubbinbg useing the clay bar it did come off, i will have to try this process again; and i do wax my car alot; that will be the fun part, lol
Thanks very much.

Are you guys useing fishing line or dental floss for getting in behind the molding and removing it?
I tried fishing line and soapy water, spent 1/2 hour or more on one little piece on the fender and still could not remove it...
Any tips,? i know its probally alot easier in the summer when the tape is all hot and @!#$...

To be honest, i dont even use fishing line to remove the side moldings

use a heat gun, or a hair dryer if you dont have one, and heat up the edge,

when its hot enough you should be able to pull it off with your hands,

if you cant get under the edge you can use fishing wire, its stronger than dental floss...

but heat is definately your friend in this case

Thanks jackson.
I have a buddy at work bringing me in a guiatr string, and i think i will attempt this again next weekend and i will start by dumping lots of hot water on them and useing the hair dryer.
I am a little afraid that when my parents owned the car like 6 years ago they had one front fender replaced, i am thinking that the dealer might have repaintted the fender and not removed the moulding piece, i hop that is not the case, if so its probally screwed up underneath that piece of molding on the fender.....
I do hope i can remove them to have a cleaner look.....

Just be careful with a guitar string, it can damage the paint..

but good luck, and most of the time dealers paint under the molding as well...

i demand pics before and after!

Okay maby i will scratch the guitar string idea, i dont want to ruin the paint...
I will just use hot water and such, if it was summer they would probaly come off no probelm, but we are in some cold temperatures here, i will give hera go again, and i will take pics before and after, and post them up
Thanks fellows

Im going to be taking off my mouldings and maybe badges. I am going to ask a friend to use a converter to convert the power from my car to household power. Then use a blow dryer to heat up the mouldings (while watching not to heat the paint up to much), until they are able to be pulled off by hand Very Carfully! Then apply "Goo Gone" to get off the excess tape. Might take some good rubbin. I used a knock-off shamwow to scrub with to save my poor fingers. Wash it off well and your good to go.
