Rear-end conversion
Monday, March 09, 2009 8:30 PM
I havent been able to find it anywhere, but I noticed on the classifieds someone advertised their rear trunk and bumper from a 2000+ saying that if you buy tails you can convert the rear-end of a older 3rd gen. Is this true? Ie. can I make something like this:

to look more like the rear end of something like this:

I have a 97 Sunfire SE, and I hate the rear end. I like the newer rear end much better. By just looking at the 2 its hard to tell if its a direct bolt on, the rear quarters look slightly different. With a newer trunk, tail lights and bumper is it do-able?

yup. lots of people have done the swap. like you stated, all you need is the bumper, tails and trunk. I believe you will need the crush bar from the newer bumper too.

you don't need the full trunk, just the filler panel.

only warning, that filler panel is bloody expensive. GM wants something like $1500CDN for it. it's also quite hard to find.

Im pretty sure all you need is the rear bumper, tail lights and trunk filler panel, you should be able to reuse your current trunk just replace the filler panel

You need the filler panel, tails, bumper, and foam guard. Thats everything you need. Nothing more, nothing less. And those items will more then likely cost you big unless you can find amazing deals..

gmpartsdirect.com prices:

Rear bumper: $254 USD
Absorber: $124 USD
Tail lights: $191 USD
Filler panel: $531 USD

Grand Total: $1100 USD for a read-end conversion.

so lets assume i manage to find the filler plate and tail lights. If I were to order an aftermarket bumper a la extreme dimensions or other ones - would those come with a new crush guard because they are shaped differently than stock? or do they use the same one as a stock 03+ would?

if you ordered a 03-05 aftermarket bumper, you would still need the crush guard, yes.

Ok, so just looking on http://www.car-part.com there are a few questions I have:

What is the difference between a "bumper guard" or a "bumper reinforcement"?

I'm assuming the filler panel is a "Trunk lid" not "trunk lid hinge", but that might be the actual trunk, any other word I should look under? (They also have tailgate/trunk lid but I'm assuming that if for a pickup truck or something...

When I select tail lights they give me the option of "2dr lid mtd" or "2dr qtr mtd R" "2dr gtr mtd L" I'm assuming that means 2 door lid mounted or quarter mounted.... any difference? The 03+ only has quarter mounted lights right?

Btw - can anyone give me any ball park figures of what I should be expecting to pay for certain parts...not like gmpartsdirect new stuff. Like I think I found a filler panel for $195...obviously used - from that site. Is that reasonable?

I got my filler panel at a flat rate pull a part junkyard for $35, shaved it for $10, an aftermarket bumper for $20 on ebay, and a set of tyc lights for $75
You can find good deals, just be patient, don't be afraid to drive a bit... the $20 bumper off ebay is a rksport streetfire bumper but i had to drive 3 hours to get it
There are different names for everything in the auto world, just try and get a good description or a picture would even be better
I'm gonna go out on a limb and say the bumper gaurd may be the crush guard and the reinforcement is the metal peice that bolts to the rear body panel
filler panel or tail light filler is what you might try... it bolts to the metal trunk lid
all sunfires have quarter mounted lights... i've never understood it either
195 for a filler panel is way too much in my book, i see it as.. I don't care what it's worth to other people. Is it worth that much to me.. if not then wait for a better deal or live with out it

picked up all 3 of mine from pic a part for about $25 each. I had $110 on a whole rear end swap on my gf's car plus paint.

The lid mounted is the filler and the quarter mounted are the lights. I'd say reinforcement is the bar and guard is the plastic crush guard. They also have whole assymbly.
