NO HEADLIGHTS!!!
Saturday, April 04, 2009 10:48 PM
Okay, my fiance has a 97 z24 and her headlights wont come on. When she turns the headlights on, her DRL lights stay on. BUT, the high beams still work...

every single light works, except for the low beams!!!

anyone have any ideas of what it could be?

Dumb question but did you check the bulbs? maybe they're both out?

Bad relays?

mine did that when the actual switch for the headlights went bad.

Are you aware of how the lights are supposed to normally operate? On the '95-'99's, the DRL's utilize the high-beam bulbs, just at lower voltage. When you turn on the low-beam headlights, the DRL's (high-beams) should go out and the low-beam bulbs come on. When you turn on the high-beams, the low-beams will go out and the high-beams (which were working as the DRL's at lower voltage) will come on at full voltage. All four beams will not be on when in high-beam mode. If this isn't the case on your car, I'd check the DRL relay.

i know how they operate, did you understand the problem? when she puts on her headlights, every light turns on and works but the headlights, the daytime running lights stay on. and even if you switch to high beams, the daytime running lights still stay on. no blue high beam light in the cluster either.

i checked relays. i checked wiring. i checked fuses. i checked bulbs.

i think i am going to go down the the junkyard and pick up a switch for 5 bucks and see what happens!

thanks everyone!!

Yeah it could be the switch. I had similar trouble with my old 97.

not to jack your thread but i just started having this same issue tonight. when i parked my car at work this morning everything worked. i come out to go home and same exact problem.

Can someone tell me how to get to the relays i need to check and how to check them? i have to drive to work in the dark tomorrow, and i only have till 9pm EST to buy whatever i need.

I realize this is an old thread, but did anyone ever figure this out?? I am currently having the same problem. It is very intermittent though and doesn't happen all the time. I have replaced bulbs, headlight switch, drl relay, checked headlight fuses, check my ground at the battery and verified plug under battery for all other grounds wasn't corroded (which it wasn't). I have basically checked everything I know to check and I'm now at a loss as to what it is. When this happens to me I hear the DRL relay start clicking and then no headlights. DRL's stay on but when filck the switch for headlights nothing comes on. Also, I don't get the high beam indicator in the dash when I flick the lever either. Has anyone figured this out, cuz it sounds like a common problem with J's?

I had the same issues, I replaced batter, checked all ground connections and wiring including the harness connection underneith the battery tray as its prone to corrosion if a battery leaks. Bulbs, Relay (which is in the fuse panel inside). If you have an alarm I suggest this one as it was my problem when EVERYTHING else I searched didnt work.

I keyed onto this after it was all working great and fine. I got in the car to leave and pulled the column down... it started, I flipped it up to get out, and it quit.. hmmm. Thinking it was the switch I opened up the column to pull the switch out, as I disconnected the switch and wire harness the ground was black and burnt. Badly. The @!#$ty install of the alarm, as they only throw a 3/4 inch wrap of tape around the alarm connections under the column. Eventually wandered off of the bared wires, and as the steel coupler of the steering shaft moved it was dead shorting against it!!.

Fix: I gutted out the alarm cause it was so poorly installed. Next I disconnected the terminals from the plug, and got some 4:1 shrink tube with adhesive. Cant remember what size it was and slid it over the connector and down over the bare spot. Use a heat gun as things are very tight and flame runs the chance of melting something.

Hope it all helps.
