98 sending it fits plastic tank?
Wednesday, March 10, 2010 4:52 PM
Before anyone asks.. yes i have searched, I found no clear cut answer.

I have a 98 Sunfire, the fuel tank is in poor shape so I am in need of replacing it, I just so happen to own a plastic 00+ tank. I realize the differences in sending units and the fuel gauge won't read because of the ohm differences etc..... but what modifications if any must I make to the sending unit for it to fit the plastic tank? Worse comes to worse I will replace the tank with another metal, but at cost, since I have this plastic one, I would be putting it to use.

Thanks.

whoever moved this to exterior, it doesn't make any sense at all. how is this a "show" thing?

Isaak, the lock ring and opening are different sizes if I remember right, you could use the set-up from a late 99 for the sending unit as I believe it's the same styling for the tank. not 100% on that though. I never got to take a good look at my dad's tank when we had dropped it.

it's not a "show" thing, but it deals with swapping something that happens to be on the exterior of the car.

I believe the 99 uses the same sending unit as the 00+, which is not compatible with the 95-99 gauge clusters (wrong impedance range). This has come up in cluster swapping discussions many times.

Thanks....

My plan was just to keep the 98 sending unit on the car but use a 00+ plastic tank, only worry was if it fit or not.... I will just play it safe and get a metal replacement tank, use the plastic tank on the 3800SC car when i get a fuel pump.
