Hey everyone,
I have a 2004 cav sedan. I really want to take off my side moldings this summer, but I am afraid of what I might find under there. I removed my "cavalier" badge on the trunk last year and it left light fade lines...but these aren't noticeable from a distance and you have to look closely. But I was thinking that the effect would be magnified on the doors since they are much larger. What is the worst that can happen? Is that fixable rather easily? I'd like to see some pics if anyone has them!
Also I would like to take off the bowties on the front and back and replace the back one with a CF one after I tint the tails. Anyone know the guy named Vince who is supposed to be a seller?
Here's what my car's side look like. Sorry it's pretty dirty atm. As you might notice, the side moldings are a slightly lighter color than the paint.
any help is appreciated. thanks

Get some fishing line and some goo gone, just start prying it off like a saw slowly...use the goo gone and a sponge to get rid of the left behinds.
I have an 01 cav and took mine off just a few days ago, I didn't have any serious fading issues, at least none that you can see without really really staring at for a couple of minutes. I say do it anyway, it looks so much better.
I'm not going anywhere just yet

Dont forget to buff it out too..might as well do the whole car.. Chances are your fade lines may disappear after the buffing of the car..

yeah i think I will. But what if there is serious fade? What am I to do in that situation? am i going to have to repaint the entire door? that is something that I do not want to do. Also my car is outside everyday and faces all the elements of the 4 seasons.

do it on a nice hot day. let it sit in the sun for a few hours. spraying goo gone on it every so often.
i was selling the bowties but ran out and dont plan on making more for a while atleast.
ah, okay. I was really looking forward to getting one. Hopefully you decide to make some in the future! do you have a picture of one?

okay, great. thanks! I'll ask him about it. I saw the pics of your bowties and I couldn't help but notice that there wasn't a hole for the keyhole...

they were front replacements not rear.
ah, okay that makes sense. Would I be able to modify it with a drill if I wanted to make it for the rear? or would it make the bowtie break?

might work but youd have to have a REALLY high speed drill. not sure how well it would work.
just take the bowtie off! the fading might be light, but i don't think it will be anything to serious. just make sure u wax that area good when u have removed them!

As long as it is sitting in the sun for a while, you should be fine

You will be fine with it warm out, but if not it will be easier if you have a space heater. Turn that sucker on and pretty close to the bowtie and side moldings for about 5min and then start working at it as Ashallee mentioned. Let us know how it turns out.
yeah as soon as it gets a nice temperature out and i have a little time I'll do it and post up my results. hang tight
thanks for all the advice

i have a bit of experience with what you wanna do. a lot of people suggest fishing line to pry it off, and i totally agree with them because it comes off like cake and if you get behind it enough, you can get almost all the sticky stuff off the car. the sticky stuff that is left, you want to use small amounts of goo gone. this will leave the fade effect like your bowties you were talking about. now is the amazing part. get some rubbing compound made for boats or vehicles, put some on the end of an electric buffer, and buff that baby out. you will be amazed at how nice it looks after your done. make sure you let the goo gone dry to get that dull effect before you compound it. once you compound it, add some swirl remover with a rag and wallah, it's like a factory fresh paint job. trust me i guarantee you it will work.
Im going to take them off of my fiancees' car (2004 LS Sport coupe) but I gotta tell ya, cant do that on my car (2005 Nissan Sentra) took one off once and have all these holes in the door from where it mounted. sux, way too much bodywork for that, guess they couldnt make it easy and put them on with double sided tape
I'm repainting my doors because when I did mine, there was a noticeable difference and the clearcoat started to peel in that whole area. My entire car was already faded so I knew it wouldn't turn out 100%. You should be fine, just remember to wash it right away.
Josh I did one side of my car the other day...peeled moldings, goo gone,,clean like hell, polish compound and the Meguire's cleaner wax ( Just a fav. of mine......) No fade, looks great...Mine is a '96...door may have been repainted but the rear quarter was not...no fade there either...It's just gonna depend on how hard you work at it. I hope no repaint is in your future,,G/L !!!
