Okay, never wet-sanded paint before, would like a tutorial if anyone would be so kind.
I got a carbon fiber gas cover from furious, but it needs to be wet-sanded a little before I put it on. Now, before you guys jump all over me and tell me to take it to a professional, RELAX. I know how to detail, buff, wax, all that jazz, but I've never wet-sanded PAINT before. I've done the head light restore, so I have the basic concepts. I will be practicing on my truck before I do it to my car. The paint on my truck is F-ed to hell anyway, so no problem in making it look worse.
So, anyone care to give me a nice little guide to make this thing shine up nice? Please if you would, give me all the steps. Thanks guys.
I do this almost everyday..
its exactly what it is..wet sanding. Get a piece of 2000 grit paper, then wet sand it, just like you did your headlights. When it all looks even, then you buff it, i hope you have a real buffer (makita, dewalt, or porter cable atleast) I have a makita 9227c. You then need a good rubbing compound 3m perfect it. after you buff it, you then need to wipe it clean and use a dark foam pad with a swirl remover. After these process' you will be good to go. it would be alot easier just to pay someone $20 to do it, especially if you dont have every supply you need. The materials are not cheap, not to mention a "real" buffer
just make sure the area your working with is clean as can be dont want to sand dirt into the scratches in your paint. dont use to much pressure while sanding eithier dont want to create a low spot in the area that your working on let the paper do its job. also remember that wet sanding has a more course cut than dry sanding does for ex. a 600 grit wet is like cutting with a 400 grit dry, so you dont have to go as course on paper while wet sanding.
Thanks for the links Matt.
John I have a real buffer, porter cable, don't remember what model at the moment. I always use 3m rubbing compound. I have some swirl remover as well.
Check on the minimal pressure.
if while you are sanding the carbon fiber the water turns from a milky color to black stop.. you have cut through and are now sanding your carbon..
^^ I will keep that in mind. Thanks.
