Headlight disassembly
Tuesday, February 15, 2011 2:20 PM
So Im trying to get my headlights apart cause one is fogged up and I want to paint the housings black. A buddy of mine did this mod to his RSX and it looks really good. My question is do the headlights actually come apart? I know its a stupid question but I just cant make it happen. Ive removed the clips holding the lens to the housing and removed the mounting bracket but the damn things just wont come apart. I even tried baking them (yes, in the oven. This is how my friend did his) and that didnt help at all. Please help.

You have to carefully heat them up in your oven to melt the glue apart.

this, i don't remember what i baked mine at when i did my clear corners, you'll have to search for a temp, i wanna say 250 for some reason? for about 10-12 minutes.

then go at it with a flathead carefully and slowly prying them apart. after you get them apart you'll have to use something to get all the old silicone out of the joints on either piece of the headlight. i used a dremel with a metal brush attachment that worked well but flung hot silicone all over the place. kinda reminded me of welding lol

then just use a good silicone to glue them back together when your'e done. you need to make sure the seal is 100% free of the old silicone or you'll never get a new watertight seal with the new stuff.

well, u can bake them as stated. u can also reuse the factory sealant by putting the lights back togther without removing the sealant as previoisly indicated.....then pop them back in the oven to melt the factory stuff back together.

i also like using a heat gun.

be very careful though....that housing plastic is very brittle.

I did it at 275 for 10 min then again at 295 for another 5 min and it seemed like the plastic just wanted to crack. I've got a friend with a heat gun tho so I think I'm gonna try that approach.

just saying if your going to paint the housing black i hope you have projectors because the chrome thats there now helps disperse the light and make you see

I have 4100k bulbs in it right now and will be upgrading to HIDs soon.

That doesn't matter. If you're headlights don't have a reflector you won't see

exactley it dosent matter how bright it is if the light dosent get projected out in front of the car

yeah, you cant just pain the chrome part.....it will kill our output to nothing.

i assumed you were putting projectors in, im glad someone clarified that.
