Sunfire tinted tails
Tuesday, March 29, 2011 4:15 PM
I have a 97 gt coupe and i tinted the outer tails today and i didnt do the whole back piece yet as i dont know how it would look if i tinted everything but the reverse lights. I reverse into parking spots about 80-90% of the time so they do come in handy. does anyone know how bright the reverse lights are when tinted.. thanks for any help. will post pics tomorrow after they can dry and i get a chance to polish them.

Just toss is some LED bulbs for the reverse lights and grow a pair. I did that with my cav and i am fine. I also have 3 coats of Nightshades on my tails and how dark the look depends on how the light hits them. The pic below is the lightest that they look.

its an old concept. time for something new to take the reigns. - Z yaaaa

the clear didn't adhere properly so i have to redo them. i did 2 coats and they are dark. like i can hardly see the lights. im thinking about getting some brighter bulbs for the brake lights and reverse lights and then black it all out

Forget spray tint, go to Walmart and pick up the 20% window tint. I used it to tint my front windshield for the top 6 inches and used the rest for the tail lights. It looks great if done right and doesnt block any of the light emitted whether is back up or tail lights. Im not using LEDs, just the stock bulbs and have no problems. Since people are posting pics here are some to show you how it looks.

So you put it on the outside? How does it not blow off? Also, didn't it melt somebody's tails if I remember right??

Yes on the outside, it sticks like vinyl pinstriping so it stays on....melt somebodie's tails?! Thats very strange. Ive had them like this for a month and have had no issues. Still looks as clean as when I first put them on. Try it yourself and see that Im not lieing. Besides, lets not thread jack and get off topic. I only posted to help ukiddin out.

If you do end up tinting the reverse lights, just install some Sylvania SilverStar bulbs. Unless you tint the reverse lights really dark, the SilverStars will make a huge difference, especially at night. Heck, while you're at it, you could put some SilverStars in your taillights as well. I have them in the taillights on my '09 Vibe GT and they are noticeably brighter. The smaller size SilverStars are $9.99 a pair at Auto Zone .

I tinted my reverse lights slightly. It dont take much to change the light output. It looks better tinted in my opinion.

I sprayed somewhere between 6 and 8 coats on mine, plus 3 coats of clear. Perhaps a bit too dark. They look awesome, but I received the middle finger more than once from other motorists last year haha! I will be redoing the tails this year. Definitely agree with the silverstar bulbs or led's when it comes to tinted lenses.

Silverstars small light bulbs do not give you any brighter output, it will give you a different Kelvin rating, not more lumen. If anything, the Silverstar 921 will give you less output than a comparable original. Even though the original will be yellower in color. If you want good output from incandescent bulb look for the watt rating, the higher the brighter it will be, but it may cost you by heating up the wires to a unsafe temperature. LEDs will (look) bright, but lumen will be low and will only give a barely adequate lighting path when backing up.

I beg to differ. I can definitely see much better when backing up at night with the SilverStars compared to the regular halogen bulbs. The light from the SilverStars is not only brighter and whiter, but the light goes off to the sides more making your rear field of vision larger.

Beg to differ all you want, but it doesn't change the fact that it is just the temperature color that changes not the lumen. Now, if you have changed to a higher watt output, then that is a different story.

Lastly, when the blue tint on the SilverStars dries up and cracks, you'll be looking at the standard color again.

I had SilverStars in the headlights of both my Sunfires for quite a few years and the coating never dried up and/or cracked.

I have had them in the Vibe for two years now and they have yet to dry up and/or crack.

Give it time. Eventually all tinted bulbs will deteriorate.
If you put them in areas that barely turn on, you'll have a longer survival time.

i agree with j to envy 100%. i have them in my headlights and i had a pic for referance between the stock and the ultra's but i can't find it. there is a noticeable difference. i've had them in my headlights for 2 years with no drying/cracking. if they die i'll replace them. 2 years is more than good enough for me.

the only thing i would ever switch to would be a set of benham's hid's. and the only reason for that would be for show, which i don't care enough about this car anymore to waste the money.

some people say they notice no difference, some say they did notice it. i'm one of those that did. and no it's not the placebo effect, as i honestly do have the pic to prove it. give me a little bit and i'll dig it up.

i have no problems with the stock reverse lights "brightness" but if i did, i would gladly change them to the ultra's before trying anything else.

I have silverstar for my low and high headlights on my BMW for atlest 3-4 years they haven't cracked pealed or anything like that
They look really cool bluish butttttttttttt they really suck at night . I drive around with my high beams on most the time ad I think my cavy stock faded lights work better
I'm not saying there bad . There really good lights for how long I've had them but I would just go with stock lights.

If yr that worried about back up lights put some on yr bumper like sum sunfires or grand ams or even better I've got some police spot lights.
