Should I cut a hole in my 96 Z24 front bumper?
Wednesday, May 25, 2011 2:41 PM
hey guys, i planning to cut out the front piece of my bumper (the part that holds in place the filler plate for the z24) for 2 reasons, #1 I don't have the filler plate and I cant find it anywhere on the web not even ebay and I don't like how it looks without it. #2 I think more air would reach the radiator without that piece of plastic covering up the radiator in the first place (these cars tend to heat up so maybe this will help cooling the radiator up a bit since I live in a tropical climate). So I just wanted to know what u guys think, have any of u Z owners done this and if it looks good or not, please post pics if so... thankz in advance

I think I still have a Manta Green one that I'd sell. I'll know for sure this weekend, as I'm cleaning the garage out and going through all my left over J-Body parts to sell off.

More air sure.
Also more crap.

I threw the idea around in the old days. If you are/know a skilled bodyman, then go ahead. It can look good.

I have seen this done on a red Z convertible near by. With out an intercooler or something like wire mesh it does look weird. Id say find the filler somewhere.

the filler plate is nice to have. I could not find one for my car for the longest time. I finally got one a couple of months back at the local pull a part... but I was just lucky and have not seen any since.

The Z's have some @!#$ goin on underneath the bumper that forces air up into the radiator to make up for the lack of front air..am I right?

That "some @!#$" is a plastic diverter to guide air up into the rad. If it's broken or missing entirely, it'll cause cooling issues (ie. over heating)

I hope you are not referring to the plastic strip thing that hangs down some... Mine got tore off in a construction zone and now I think about it... my car has been running a little warmer...

That plastic strip is exactly what I am talking about.

Between the air dam below the radiator and the plastic "guide" that runs from the bottom of the bumper cover to behind the crash bar ( I think it goes that high) there is no need for cutting out the filler plate. Removing it also looks quite crappy in my opinion.

Just change out the bumper with the 2.2 bumper so you've got the smiley grill to allow more air flow.
That's what I did and have never had an issue with overheating with the hot summers we have here in the Deep South.
I don't like it as much as the Z bumper but compromise allows for the function to come through when needed.
Just sayin..

i ripped that plastic 'strip' crap off both my cars because it always frickin hits something, plus it just looks utterly retarded under there.

never once had an issue with over heating. not once.
