DRL's Flashing
Tuesday, June 07, 2011 1:07 PM
So I have had this problem for a while, On my 99 z24 I put in a relay to make my low beams stay on with highs & did the High beam + fog lights mod and the flashing started, Only happens when you start the car and release hand brake ( I have 5 speed) and the DRL's should come on, but instead they flash for a few seconds, sometimes up to 4 or 5 seconds, and I can hear the relay in fuse box clicking on and off. I tried pulling the DRL relay, and no more flashing, but I don't have high beams on left side (where relay is) Right side works as normal and low beams work as normal. I know the fog lights aren't doing it so it must be the high/low relay but why would they be causing this.. Any Ideas? I'd like to keep my high low mod if possible because it gives so much more light without upgrading my bulbs and i cant stand the DRLs flashing

Well your DRL's are probably flashing b/c of the mods. Low beams are wired to go off when high beams come on, and vice versa. It's probably a warning indicator, to look for problems. B/c cars don't just click and flash lights on their own. I would say re-visit your mods, possibly try to find out if there is anymore information floating around on the web, similar problems, fixes, no fixes, ect.

I know that, stock wired running lights, turn off when the high beams go on (too much light and blinds other drivers), it's a safety thing. So that's where i'd start with each seperate thing you did, return them to stock, engage it under "normal" conditions. See which is causing it. Possibly it could be both at once as well, having that much amperes flowing to the lighting system at once. Defiantly worth looking into though.

also the Malibu mod (What you're describing) is fine. People have been doing that shit since at least 100 years ago.

I checked for burned out bulbs, that was the first thing I did because thats what people said the flashing meant, but all my lights are good, nothing burned out... could the mod be making the computer think one is burned out? I'll un plug the relay and see what that does, if it still flashes than something else must be going on.

So theres not many labels or explanation here... but I think this means that the mod IS making it think I have a burned out bulb? Any way to correct it?
This is the post from the DRL/Headlight Mod's stickey that I used to get my Hi/Lo's... His car was a 96 though, mine 99, would that make a difference there? That year probably didn't have the burned bulb warning maybe?

Luis Baptista wrote:Very clear drawing for fog lights, since my car is a 96 all i did for them was cut the pink wire as was posted. Now for the the Low Beams to stay on with the Hi Beams, This is how I did it and it is working OK ,after two blown 15 amps left hi beam fuses, I got some help from my bro who knows his way in electronics :
You only need one relay, guess it is because the high beams are in parallel, the bosh 30 amp 4 pins, will be enough
1º Pin 30 to low beam ground
2º Pin 85 to positive hi beam
3º Pin 86 to ground hi beam
4º Pin 87 to ground
¡Voi la, when you turn the high beams you do not loose the low beams!
Only minus is I lost the bright pilot light on the dash.

If you can't read my diagram then you need to get a lot more familiar with relays.
What don't you understand?

Basically, I'm guessing that you cut the left hibeam wire and used one side to turn on the relay, and the other side was connected to the output of the relay, along with the low beam wire.

You need to NOT cut the wire, because yes, the BCM will think there is no bulb.

I know plenty about relays but your diagrams don't show what is what, it lacks explanation of what the wires are... I didn't cut any wires either. They are all connected using wire taps according to the post above by Luis. There must be something else in adding that relay that makes this happen, but it is not because of a cut or misplaced wire. If I unplug one of the signal wires it will disable the relay and the lights will work as normal, nothing in the harness was modified just a few wires added to it. My guess is that its the high beam positive that is giving issues. I have a few things to do to the car this weekend so i'll tear into it then and see what comes up.

What isn't labeled?
Pin numbers are pointless on the diagram, because all Bosch relays have the pins in that specific arrangement. (Looking at the pin-side of the relay).

You're going to have to post a diagram of how YOU have it wired up, because if it is wired like the one on my left diagram, it should work fine.
I know this, because I currently have this mod IN my car.

I still think your diagram makes no sense. I can see what your talking about there but thats not how the headlights work here. I did the mod on my Beretta too, it was much simpler there because I wired it exactly how you show there in your diagram and they work perfect. What your not seeing (I think) is that my 99 has constant 12 volt power to the headlights when the key is on/car on whatever, no lights or DRL's on. The headlight switch is on the ground side, therefore I have the relay to switch the grounds,

I think I see the problem now. You have a 2000 Cavalier, not a '99.

From your description of the wire function, I'm guessing that you have a single bulb for both high and low, yes?
If that's the case, I don't think you can do this mod, pretty sure it melts bulbs and sockets.

I have a 99. highs and lows are separate.

Then that's messed up. Someone else will have to chime in because mine are all positive.
